Secondary IDE device detection problem on mobo

I have an ASUS CUSL2-C and on the primary channel is the HDD. On the secondary is the cd burner. When I try and connect my cd-rom to the primary slave channel, it is detected in the BIOS, but it has all kinds of weird characters shown and it won't detect it in the boot device part. Also, when it goes through the post it won't detect it and it gets stuck there saying press f4. I tried 2 drives and still have the problem. On part of the power cable one of the red wires is kind of comming out but I pushed it back in, in case that matters. Any suggestions?

I would switch the cables for the hd and the 2 cds and see if you get the same problem. Also if any part of the wire is exposed I would find another cable to use. Mix and match stuff and try to isolate the problem. You might try detaching the cdr all together and see if you can detect the drive as a master. Just my quick thoughts on the matter.
