Secondary HDD causes BSOD

Since1983

I found out that my slave harddrive is causing the "Machine check exception" BSOD. Problem is I have 30gigs of data I want to retrieve but can't because sometimes when I try to browse, open, copy the files...it gives me the BSOD. Is there another way I can retrieve my files (preferably in windows)?

Thanks in advance.

When do you receive the BSOD? right after trying to access the hdd or the folders on the hdd?

thanks for the reply
when tryin to access a file
i took the HD out and put it in an external enclosure and it was able to take my files off of it

i had a Plextor DVD Burner on the same IDE cable tat went bad maybe tat had something 2 do with it??

Interesting. So the problem isn't the drive or data on the drive - it's the interface.

Did you have the most recent version of your SATA driver installed in Windows?

Yeah, I don't have too much faith in western digitals diagnostic tool..my drive was clicking, locking up at bios, failing to be detected, and still passed there diagnostic..

Sorry for late reply... I've tried safe mode and I still got BSOD. I get it once i try to access files from a folder. It is happening more often now.

Btw, I'm using ide drive.

Thanks for the replies

PS: A little search I've found

What if you put the drive in another computer? Same problem?

Ok, I've put it in another computer and everything seems fine now. The other computer uses win2k and the one that got the bsod was winxp. This is so weird considering I have other ide drives that work perfectly fine with both systems. Can someone care to explain this? Would the drivers be suspect here?
