I'm getting a secondary air injection system error CEL in my 2000 Jetta 1.8T. From my understanding, it just blows air into the exhaust manifold on cold starts for cleaner emissions. It's a bitch to get to, and I don't have a floor jack to get underneath the car to see if it's working or if it's just the solenoid. It's a few hundred dollars for a new one and I really don't want to spend the money. There's no emission testing in Alabama anyway.

So, is there any problems with not changing it?

Thats one of the good things about living in AL - no emissions testing. Do you really have to get underneath the car to change the smog pump? Most vehicles you can reach it simply by opening the hood. (I'm just not familiar with the particular setup of your VW)

Since you are working on this you may want to check out your oxygen sensors while you are at it... Not changing it will just keep your vehicle throwing a CEL, in addition to the extra emissions. It will be okay short term, but I'd go ahead and take care of it...

You'll get a CEL and eventually the exhaust backflow will kill the kombi valves.

I have a 1.8T swap in my MK3, and all that SAI junk was removed when they installed the motor. It's been 4 years and I've never had a problem.
