second opinion...win98

ok i need a second opinion. A Staff Non Commissioned Officer here is running win98 (why i have no idea) and his computer is freezing up randomly on startup. Sometimes it freezes up, sometimes it resets spontaneously. i told the IS guy here to boot with stepbystep confirmation to see where its freezing up. He said it stalls for several minutes on the virt device driver "VSWP.VXD"...a yamaha driver from what I can tell. But is this really the root of the problem? It seems to me that it could..or could NOT be the problem. Heat is pretty much out of the question...it has something to do with drivers i think. any ideas? Besides reformatting, i mean =)

If you think it's the souncard, try removing it's drivers in safe mode then restart. If it boots up fine, you'll know that it is the culprit. If it is the culprit try and find updated drivers for it.

the problem here is that the freezes arent consistent...they come and go so you can't really tell if thats the problem or not. And this is not one of those people you want to tell, "umm well i'm not sure if its fixed so how about you just use the computer for the next week and if it crashes again, give me a call" this is more like "yes its fixed, master gunnery sergeant." ahh well...i'm a programmer..i don't do tech support =)
