Yeah, it is easy to get mad and say what a bunch of idiots, but just to land the thing is amazing.

an obvious sign that we need to spend billions sending a manned mission to Mars. I can't wait to mourn the certain tragedy.

I don't get how people always say this. Given a few years and 850 million to play with I'm pretty sure I, along with the best design team I could buy, could build a pair a rovers that could land on mars and break within a matter of hours. I think most of us probably could. This is assuming that the rockets that boosted them into space aren't part of that budget too. I'd imagine those are fairly spendy :Q

The first one is not broken - they already hit ctrl-alt-delete and are running memtest86 to make sure the RAM is still kosher. However, due to the stupid huge latency, that'll take awhile.

The second one is either a short circuit or a faulty temperature probe in a system with redundancy. They just have to figure out how the heck to cut power.

Well, I'll admit I haven't been following the missions too closely but according to that article Spirit has been busted since Wednesday. The latency on the other hand, should only be a bit over 3 minutes. That's a bit of a time disparity ;)
