20k people online at a time? wtf? battlenet servers for starcraft have had more each night and its a 5+ year old game!!

figured i might as well post it since search didn't bring anything up. its just annoying we find this out now after the media kept hyping it with tech story after tech story on how there were 2 million users and it was the next big thing. i guess thats how it works, people just write articles when they see other people writing articles and it just spirals out of control:p remember all the stories about online businesses and companies building online corporate meeting places gah....

fact checking ftl:p i guess this is what they call the media echo chamber.

just look at some of the bs

"Wired Magazine launches their presence in Second Life with an informal party featuring music of The Kleptones. The building is an exact replica of the company's headquarters in San Francisco, and it's set amid vast lawns overlooking Second Life's blue ocean. Look closely at that ocean and you'll see the island purchased by British news giant Reuters (RTRSY), which made its Second Life debut on Oct. 16."

I hear about it in the media from time to time, and I still don't know anyone who plays it.

my other gripe is when the media tries to claim that half of gamers are women:p
stretching the definition of gaming to solitair i bet:p
usually the figure is quoted when talking about not having enough women in the industry:p or something about sexism, or boobies in games:p

Half of gamers are probably women. However, nobody wants to say that or they get a bunch of crap from either pre-pubescent idiots, or horny teenagers, or super-creepy nerds.

so i guess half of those subscribing to computer mags like cpu are women? half the customers of computer mod/upgrade equipment and building their own gaming pc's are women?
half of console buyers are women?
i have serious doubts.

someone that occasionally plays their boyfriends console isn't really worth much as a customer you know

Yeah I don't know... all of my friends who play games are males. My wife plays casually.

I agree. I logged in once to check it out and it was pure crap.

I also don't know a single person that plays it...not even a friend from the internet and I talk to a lot of people.

It was a joke. Every time I am playing a game and some chick comes on, half the guys are asking about her cup size, her number, and if she's horny. It's pretty pathetic actually.

yup but mostly because a female gamer is so rare. just check out a game with voice coms like counterstrike or whatever. the few rare times there was a female, she was with guy friends and it was obvious from their comms.

Half of Gamers as you know it are not female.

Half of the overall game market are female.

Where I work there are 3 gamer guys. But we are the "GAMER" guys.
There are 3 GAMER gals and at least 4 "Game Market" gals.

The big disconnect you see (in voice com etc) is that the Game Market isn't just Console/Hardcore gaming. The Sims isn't a hardcore game but many women play it. Puzzle games aren't a huge AAA title producing genre but women play it.

Not to mention the fact that some women will only admit they play games if you actually ask what they do every minute of the day because they don't see playing the game as important, its just a recreational activity. Just as they won't talk about every little thing they read or watch on TV.

I know one mother of 3 who told me about how she occasionally plays a bit of Animal Crossing on her daughter's DS. And how she uses it more now as a means of leaving notes for her daughter.

There is a reason people want to get the casual market. Its Huge. Much bigger then you would normally think.

20k isn't all that bad for a newer game. Back when AC2 was still around, each server would only have 1-2k on it, which was at the highpoint of its life-cycle. Near the end there were only a few servers left running, and you'd sometimes have less than 100 people on each.
