I keep hearing about it, but I'm just confused about the idea. Is it game ? Do you "play" it or something?

i never understood the appeal of second life. your life has to be pretty ***** if you can enjoy "working" in a computer game

I don't really get it either.

Is it kinda like Sim City, minus the player upkeep? I understand that you buy and sell things (clothes) with real money.. but what else do you do? Can you hang out at bars? Do players own the bars? Do the drinks cost real money!?

But the idea of "drinks" is absurd, because it's not real... you're buying 'em for your character, but there is no value in that.

Well I don't even know if there are drinks--are there? I'm just rambling.

I have a friend you did the whole online prostitute thing. She made about a hundred bucks in a month. 100% income since the game is free.

probably the same reason people go bonkers when the forums have been down for a few days....as evidenced by the threads started after they come up

a lot of people have highly addictive personalities

But .... but it's online, and you walk around with Nintendo wii characters. How can you prostitute yourself?

Some people make pretty good dope working in a computer game, and it is a game so enjoyment is implicit.

But it would be like IM sex... or in other words completely pointless. And that IRC/AT is a false analogy - that's just internet chat. It's not like I'm about to buy a house for my 'halik' online identity.

So...how many level 70 characters are needed to handle a raid dungeon in Second Life and what would it be like?

i don't think there is even such a thing as levels, let alone raid dungeons or combat, in Second Life, is there?

Everything in Second Life is player generated. SL gives you the basic tools such as object creation, editing, and a programming language used for scripting objects (giving objects or your avie animations)..

I only "play" it to chat with friends from different parts of the country. In other words, it's a glorified chat room. Some people really get into it, and produce all kinds of things from clothing, to weapons, as well as offer services such as architects, designers, etc. They even make money off of it since the in-world currency is tradeable for real money. It's kinda crazy.

the reality is second life is bullsh*t hype. they count users that just try it out and never play it again, most people who get swept in by thehype don't actually use it consistently. they've used the hype to scare companies who don't want to miss the next "internet" into investing in silly virtual stores and stuff, its quite the racket. and well journalists who are too lazy to fact check just love to write about virtual reality and its effects on society and all that stuff, they can use it as a jump off point to fill pages and to talk about whatever. bit of a media echo chamber really.
