Second HD doesn't work..

Well, about a month ago my 120 GB Maxtor HD stopped responding. Basically, the computer would not even boot if the HD was plugged in. It was also making a loud clicking noise. I figured it was a dead HD, and so sent away to get a new one covered by warranty.

I've now received the new one, and upon installing it, I get the exact same problem. DOS will not even boot up and the clicking sound persists. I'm sure the new HD is perfectly functional, so what else could be the problem?

Hard drives really arent meant to click. Call them up and tell them the problem, you'll probably have to RMA it again.

If you can try it in another machine, double check jumper settings on the new drive, clicking could be something else but depends on the sound. Are you able to get into BIOS?

Well, perhaps it isn't the HD that's doing the clicking? I can't really be sure. I thought maybe it was the power supply, but I can't see that causing any noises.

The PSU would only click if there was something wrong with the fan, and chances are it would be a different noise altogether. If you want to make sure, disconnect power to the drive and power up, listening for the click.

No I cannot get into BIOS if I have the drive connected. As soon as I disconnect it, the computer boots just fine and there is no "clicking" noise at all.

Is it possible that I was sent a faulty drive? It seems unlikely.

It's very possible or perhaps the drive may have been damaged in transit.

Real longshot here...

I had a similar problem and turned out to be a dead power connector from the psu. Just no juice from some of the 5v connectors. Confirmed it by attaching a fan to the connector. Of course it didn't spin.

Might try a different IDE cable just for kicks.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I did try a different IDE cable and it still didn't boot. Either IDE cable boots with the working HD, though.

I'm curious about how you're disconnecting the drive.. are you unplugging BOTH the IDE connector and the power connector? If so, then I'm curious as to whether the clicking still occurs with ONLY the power connector hooked up without the IDE connector. 😉 If you still get the clicking then it probably is a bad drive. BTW, have you compared the serial numbers of the drive you returned with the drive you got back? Are they different?

Also, double-check the jumper settings.. perhaps a problem with CS(Cable Select) -- perhaps try setting the drive to Master(or Single Drive), with just that drive on the IDE channel by itself...see what you get then. 🙂

Okay, I tried what you said networkman. With just the powersupply and no IDE cable connected the drive still made the same annoying sound. I also tried changing the jumper settings from CS to Slave and had the same result. Should I just conclude that it's a faulty drive and send this one back to Maxtor?

Also, it is a different drive completely, because I did advanced RMA shipping, so I actually have my old HD still, in addition to the new one they just sent me.

Yeah, without the IDE connector hooked up, getting the clicking is a bad sign indeed. I'd call up Maxtor support and explain the situation. You might also mention you've tried the "replacement" drive in another machine to confirm it's not solely a problem with one PC. 😉
