Second HD causes delays? Help!

Hi,

After installing yesterday my second HD, on the secondary channel of an ATA100 controller (the primary is connected to the main disk drive, which has Windows and all the programs), I noticed that I have delays of about one to two seconds. Whether I want to select some files in an open window, change the font size in Word or empty the recycle bin, there's always a break, during which I wonder if I need to repeat the command. It gets really annoying after a while.

Do you know how I can solve the problem? Please check my rig in the signature for additional hardware details.

Are they both set to "DMA enabled" in the properties? Are they both ATA-100? Are they both on the same channel?

Check the jumpers to make sure that your main drive is the master, and the second is a slave. Hope this helps.

OK, when I go in Control Panel, both drives have check marks in the boxes for "Disconnect" and "Sync Data Transfer".

They are both 7200 RPM ATA100. Each of them is the only drive on the cable, so I guess they're both masters (although the jumper on the second HD is NOT set to Master - I followed the instructions manual, which says if the drive is the only device on the cable, I should put the jumper in another way.)

When the computer booths, the main HD is seen on channel (?) 0, and the second one is seen on channel (?) 2. At least, I believe they're called channels.

DMA not being enabled would cause noticeable delays... disabling DMA can cause winamp to skip for me, and many things become sluggish.

This is a strange problem. Never heard of anything like it. What OS are you using? What did you use to format the new drive? What kind of partitions do you have?

if dma is enabled and you have the correct chipset drivers for the ide bus then it might be the drive. even though it's relatively new. try downloading the drive testing software from the manufacturer. this should let you check the drive without reformatting. also, if this is a western digital hd, try setting the jumpers to cable select rather than master, wd hds are particular this way.
