second hard drive

should it be the slave on primary IDE.

or doesn't matter where it goes.

current system:

1.8 gHz
30GB
1 cd writer

bought a new 160gb maxtor and wondering what is the best way to add this disk.

Slave on secondary if you have 2 disc drives

Most people like it like so

Main HDD master on primary
DVD drive slave on primary

CD-RW master on secondary
Secondary HDD slave on secondary

Personally, I'd copy everything from the 30GB HD to your new 160GB HD & make the 160GB HD your new Primary Master 🙂
