Could somebody help me where I can buy second CPU for 6400 Server?
Also are there many flacvors of PIII Processors? If So, how can I identify mine?

I have loaded Win XP already, now can I just plug the second CPU? or Do I need to reinstall win XP?

Could somebody help me please...

Thanks in advance

Of course there's many flavors. Slot processors (100MHz and 133MHz FSB's) Socket processors (100 & 133) and the new Tualitins which are socketed and has more cache and higher clock speeds. Or you could just be talking about P3 Xeon processors, (100 & 133 again) Slot 2 interface. Try running dxdaig - It will tell you what you got. Windows XP does support SMP, so just put the other processor in and see what happens. I think it would be better to just do a clean install - I had a great time trying to make my floppy drive work with my other system (which i ripped apart in rage) windows thought it was a 5.25" floppy. I now its working - considering I have a somewhat new system and using a different floppy drive and cable.

Hit start, Go to Run, and type in dxdiag. Dxdiag is the Direct X Diagnostic tool. And to use it of course, you need pretty much any version of Microsoft's DirectX installed on your system. If run doesn't find it, install it by installing any pretty recent game (Its usually bundled with them on the CD) or just go to www.windowsupdate.com and download and install. Or you could always just us SiSoft's Sandra.

Yep, I found it.

This is what I got when I ran the dxdiag

System Manufacturer: Gateway
System Model: Gateway 6400
BIOS: RCC - 1
Processor: Intel Pentium III, ~933MHz
Memory: 1024MB RAM
Page File: 143MB used, 2318MB available

I know that this 933Mhz -133 Mhz, so what processor should I buy?

Any help..
Thank you

Well I really cant tell you, but you'll have to open your case for this one. Is yours a rackmount or just a tower? Sounds like a rackmount. (They're so cool) Well open the case and look at the processor currently installed. Observe whether it is a "Cartridge" or slot processor. It should be black. If it is, is it shaped like a rectangle or a more square-ish shape? Or it could be a "Chip" or Socket processor. The chip should be green. Either way, Remove the heatsink/fan, and remove the processor. Then write down all the numbers written on the processor- It should be alphanumeric.

So, what to buy?

If you have a Black Rectangle Processor, then buy this:
Intel Pentium III 933MHz, Slot 1, 133MHz Bus

If you have a Black Square-ish Processor, then buy this:
Intel Pentium III Xeon 933MHz, Slot 2, 133MHz bus, x,xxxKB cache. (If you have a Xeon it would be best to match cache amounts.)

If you have a Green Chip Processor, then buy this:
Intel Pentium III 933MHz, Socket 370 FC-PGA, 133MHz Bus

Next comes stepping. In order for the processors to work in SMP, they need to have Matched Steppings. Remember when I told you to write all those serial #'s down? Ok, now look for somehting that looks around 5 characters. It should start with SL. Just find another processor with those 5 characters and you have a match. You might even want to contact Gateway and see if they can provide you with a match. Since steppings for OEM processors and Retail processors are totally different, don't try your luck buying every last Pentium III in the store only to find none are matches.

Or you could just buy 2 faster processors, ususally if you buy 2 OEM processors online, they vendor would be nice enough to match them for you, or you could even call them. Remember that OEM processors are bulk packaged and are usually in clear plastic trays. They can just read off the steppings and find one, with any luck.

Also remember that it only needs to have the same STEPPING, not nessesarily being manufacturered at the same PLANT (Costa Rica, Ireland, Malaysia, Philipines...) You might even want to toss those and be sure your'e getting two matched processors and getting some GHz processors. And you can sell your old P3.
