Second 970 not showing up?

So I just got a couple of the Asus Strix 970 cards to replace my two 570's. Seemed like a great idea, right??

Well, it is, in the sense that even one 970 is significantly faster than the 570 SLI! But... the second card doesn't like to work. Either card works when plugged in individually, and the second slot works with just one card in it, but when they're both plugged in together then the second card just doesn't seem to register. Doesn't show up in Device Manager, isn't available in the nVidia options, etc.

Worse still, I get significant system instability when I use it, including game crashes after only a couple of minutes including weird Windows errors that pop up about "too many 16-bit processes" or something.

I'm running an older i5-2600k on an MSI P67A-G53 motherboard, circa 2010. Any ideas what's going on?

Post your psu, all hardware. You had sli working (570), so that's something to check off. Trying a clean install of newest driver again. Maybe uninstall, reboot, start install with clean install checked. Then re-boot again.
If problems persist, try each card alone with other card removed to verify each card's integrity.

I can definitely try a fresh driver install. I have tried each card separately in all the combinations I could think of, and they seem to work that way.

Does the MB you are using state that it supports SLI? The nlink to the newer mb only lists CrossfireX.

Learned the hardway that unless the specs definitely say they support SLI I'm taking a risk.

I'd back up even further and go fresh win 7 install/image. Start from scratch.

It's pretty clear it's not a hardware issue as you've had the 570's running in sli for some time and tested each 970 seperately.

I would use CCcleaner to make sure you got rid of all the old drivers and try a fresh install of the latest drivers.

I'll give it a shot for sure. I probably will not go so far as reinstalling Windows, as that sounds painful. I'll jump on a new motherboard before I do that.

Have you tried to change slots on the cards? Simply to exclude the second isnt bad by any chance.

x8/x8 PCI Express 2.0 is fine for 970 SLI.

Update Motherboard BIOS.

Driver sweep. And reinstall latest drivers.

If still same issue...

Then i'd load up fresh OS on spare HD and see if that resolves. If it doesn't and both cards work fine individually then i'd say hardware side related issue. If so, just sell off one 970.

Attic is correct. The latest BIOS for your mb is early 2013. Time to update the BIOS.

Just ran Driver Sweeper; it seems to improved stability somewhat when the second card is plugged in for whatever reason, but I still only get one 970 showing up in Device Manager.

I fired up HWInfo and noticed that the slot is running at x8, which is not what I would have expected. I guess I'll take the card out again and see if it upgrades to x16. But in any case there's only one card there.

I guess reinstalling Windows is the next step after all!

You know, I actually flashed my BIOS yesterday, but now that I look at it I think I may have installed one that I downloaded a long time ago. The file I installed had an updater exe and some BIOS files on it, whereas I can see from looking at it again the one I thought I had downloaded yesterday only has one exe that wants to be loaded directly onto a thumb drive.

So maybe my inability to competently figure out which file I downloaded is the culprit here! I'll try again when I get home!

Thanks for your assistance, guys!

Well, I updated the BIOS and I reinstalled Windows, and unfortunately I still seem to be out of luck.

I guess that's a go on a new motherboard!

Bummer. Let us know if new board does the trick. I've seen issues with motherboards as recent as P55 and P67 having problems with the newer 290 cards, when the 290 cards work fine on z87. Wonder if you are running into some compatibility with your era board and the 970's. We know your SLI 570's worked in this setup without issue, so it's an interesting hit you face.

Is your board a P67 or Z77 chipset?

Long shot stuff, but before new board you may try (if not done already) just the 2 cards (both same time) with all other PCI and PCI Express slots empty, no USB, especially No USB3 ports in use and with only one HD on SATA1 and see if that has same effect.

If the Mobo has any Power Plug 4pin or 6pin on the motherboard in addition to 8pin CPU then make sure that is powered. Some boards have extra power plug to deliver power to PCI-Express slots independent of 24 pin and 8/4 pin that are standard.
