How would you get downtown on a daily basis from north Seattle at, say, 4am. At or around Westlake center.

My best idea so far is to drive as close to downtown Seattle as there is free parking (where?) and then bicycle. My second best idea is to move to downtown Seattle. Parking space + tax does not seem to make up for the cost reduction of living further away, as rents are bad in the region in general.

Free parking and downtown Seattle does not compute. If it were me, I would find a cheap parking place close to I5 downtown. Did you see if any buses were running off a park and ride near you at that time? I know my bus starts at 5am.

That is the problem, they all start at 5am. Currently I get there at 5:30am. My initial idea was to drive to a park and ride but that doesn't seem to work.

From where? The King County Metro system is actually pretty good.
Your new best tool: http://tripplanner.kingcounty.gov/cgi-bin/itin_page.pl

Bike to bus: Live on the Eastside near I-90. There are good bike lanes over the bridge, then catch a bus in the downtown ride-free zone from 5th and Jackson to Westlake.

Bike the whole way: Live on the Eastside near I-90. Bike across the bridge and it drops you in the International District/Pioneer Square area (south end of downtown). Bike north to Westlake (kind of far to me but then I'm not a biker.)

Bus to bike: Live anywhere on the Eastside and drive/bike to a park and ride. They're EVERYWHERE. Catch a bus into downtown with your bike on the front, then hop off and bike to Westlake.

Bus the whole way: Drive/bike to a park and ride, catch a bus or three to Westlake.

Live downtown: Self-explanatory. :)

FYI, you cannot bike across the 520 bridge, just 90. The answer to your question really depends on where you want to live though; are you more a city, suburb or country person?

There are buses before 5am. http://tripplanner.kingcounty.gov/cgi-bin/sched_page.pl Try the 5th and Jackson bus stop (one of the more active stops that serves as an incoming and transfer point into Seattle) and see what pulls up.

Sweet thanks, I found a good route just down the street. Even better, it operates nightly (another problem I was having was buses not starting later than 6am on Saturdays/Sundays).

edit: a bit of both.. I moved to Seattle a few months ago but my living situation is temporary, so in a couple of months I'll be moving to Seattle as far as picking a neighborhood, finding a place, etc.

You're welcome! If you're moving into the area we'll need to do drinks sometime, and include some of the other Seattlites. If we pick a good weekend we can even get a junior mod to come - or would that kill the mood? ;)
