I can't even begin to express all the levels of stupid this shows. And they act all proud of their monumental idiocy!

Any Seattle taxpayer should be ashamed of their politicians and remember what they did the next time they vote.

As Congress drags its feet on implementing gun safety laws, one city is taking its own steps to reduce gun violence. This week, Seattle announced that its police department would no longer sell the extra guns it has on hand, which generally brings in $30,000 revenue, annually. Instead, officers will destroy their firearms so that they don’t fall into the wrong hands.

On Monday, the City Council unanimously voted in favor of a resolution to change the Seattle Police Department’s (SPD) current protocol for purging unused firearms. On average, SPD has 100 extra guns every year, which they sell back to manufacturers. In the past, those guns have landed in civilian hands, and in February, two officers fatally shot a man who was in possession of a gun previously registered to one of their colleagues.

In an attempt to minimize future gun violence, the City Council chose to have SPD melt down its firearms — a move that a department representative later endorsed. Shortly before the decision was made, council members were supposed to vote on a resolution that would only allow SPD to sell unused firearms to other law enforcement officials. Councilman Tim Burgess amended the legislation to ban sell backs altogether, but the idea was originally introduced by Mayor Ed Murray and Councillwoman Sally Bagshaw.

Sounds like it might be a good idea if they're ending up in the hands of criminals...

But they don't.

They are sold back to the manufacturers who presumably then sell to distributors who then sell to dealers. The dealers would have to sell to end users only after doing a background check like every other gun they sell.

This isn't like Obama and Holder selling guns directly to criminals like in their Fast and Furious project.

No no no. This is like my wife's logic. We save money when she buys 8 of something we don't need if they're on sale.

Don't you think the department pays money for those firearms? Do you really believe that they then sell those firearms (used) BACK to the manufacturers for MORE than they bought them?

Nope. They sell them back at a loss. But they count the money they get... as... revenue.

Holy crap batman.

Getting rid of guns isn't the same thing as getting rid of hate, folks.

Well when you compare the revenue from the melted guns ( scrap metal ) against the 30k they get from selling them... My point is obvious.

Why not destroy them? The dumbed down liberal taxpayers will gladly fork over more money to buy new ones.

seattle pd uses glocks, unless you think there is something historically special about a bunch of gen3 and gen4. (its not like these are limited batches of fbi sw1076.)

plus have you ever handled a duty issue gun?
open bottom holsters let in a ton of crud, holster drawing practice leaves tons of wear on the finish, grips take a beating as it ends up being a natural resting place for the draw hand elbow during interview position. assuming they train regularly and have re-cert on qualifications, the barrels arent going to be that pristine. most officers arent gun nuts so many pistols end up pretty abused. those that do care for the gun or form a sentimental attachment usually end up buying it near retirement.
(used pd equipment isnt a bargain. unless they forget to strip out the engine, you really dont ever want to buy a used police cruiser. most end of service issue shotguns are so loose and rattling you wouldnt want to trust them.)

other than special engraved versions, most police duty weapons are at best worth the story telling value.

So, Seattle voted to increase the profits of gun manufacturers? Business 101? Supply and demand? They had no realistic effect on supply, since manufacturers can make enough guns to meet demand, and what they *think* they're affecting - demand - well, they're not.

Holy shit that is incredibly stupid. They achieved absolutely nothing and cost the taxpayers a bunch of money. Who keeps putting these damned retards in charge of things?
