Seatbelts on airplanes: necessary?

While I don't think they do jack if you slam into the ground at 500mph, they will keep you in your seat during rough turbulence.

Seatbelts are planes are more useful than the safety talks given at the start of each and every flight. I think we all know how to use a seatbelt by now, and if by some act of God there is a someone who doesn't, that is his/her own damn fault. Not to mention the airlines obsession with turning off all electronic devices during the take-off and landing and placing seats in the upright position. There is no good reason for either policy other than to annoy the hell out of me and every other passenger while flying.

Of course.

I travel a lot and have hit some pretty rough turbulance - meaning those without their seatbelt were injured.

Plus there is that whole crash thing.

In the event of a moderate crash, probably, for turbulance, for sure. For a major crash, nope.

I think a lot of it is to keep the passengers calm too. Bit of a psychological aspect, methinks.

Seatbelts in cars necessary?

And Daniel, the reason your seatback has to be in the upright position for takeoff and landing is so that, if an evacuation were necessary, your seat isn't blocking the egress of those seated in the row behind you. Edit: This is why the seats in the row in front of an emergency exit do not recline at all. You don't want to sit there!

funny you ask. I was talking with a guy next to me on my last flight about the seatbelts, and he told me that he once saw on the news a plane's entire top came off somehow while landing and the only guy that wasn't wearing his seatbelt got sucked out. I don't know if thats possible, but it makes you want to wear it just in case!

It was a flight out of Hawaii and I belive the person w/o a seatbelt was a flight attendant.

electronics have been known to interfere with the signals received from instrument landing systems and other navigation systems.

you should also check the bolts holding your seat to the deck upon boarding 😉

plus you don't want your cell phones to interfere with the traffic controller dudes remote controlling your plane, now do you?

Not at this level, though. Hence why the FAA is finally in the process of modifying all of its procedures.

You are referring to a Hawaiian Airlines flight.

Shuan is referring to United Flight 811, I think.

Many of those who died on Flight 811 ended up going through the engine.

EDIT: I'd like to mention that I can think of at least one time where bad turbulence killed a woman. I think it was around Japan. There is video out there.

I prefer to be strapped into my seat for the majority of the flight. The only time I take my belt off is when I get up. 🙂

: ) Amanda

You would not believe the forces experienced when an airplane hits a nice sized bump. People break their necks slamming into the overheads.

I'd say seatbelts are there mainly, but not only for flight upsets.

I know that is the justification, but it is ridiculous. We're stuffed into airplanes like sardines with hardly any room in between seats to begin with, so the removal of 3 inches won't do jack during an emergency situation.
