Seatbelt Ticket

Okay this morning I got pulled over for not wearing my seatbelt, but I don't care about the fine cost, I just want to know how it works with getting points on my license or whatever, and if it will raise the cost of my insurance and such, because I have no idea how those things work. Thanks for the help.

i think it counts as a non-moving violation...ie no liscense points. not sure about insurance points though...they work in weird ways

I dont know if its just my state or nationwide but theres a big "Click-it or Ticket" compaign going on right now and cops are specifically targeting people that aren't wearing thier seatbelts.

My brother in law in Canada told me that the 3 worst violations for insurance (because of the perceived potential for injury) were:

1) Drunk Driving
2) Caught with a radar detector

and

3) Driving without a seatbelt

There are a couple of advantages to living in a state where everything is 10 years behind.

For example, not wearing a seat belt is not a primary offense here. That means you have to be pulled over for something else (like speeding) before they can write you up for the seatbelt.

I guess that doesn't really help, sorry. 😉

Yeah, it's the same way in Maryland. I've gotten one. It's a $25 dollar fine, and it's also not considered a moving violation.

Here in Connecticut there's always an unofficial "Click it or Ticket" campaign going on. They like to grab cars as they enter highway onramps from city streets or at the head of long exit ramps. It's a big money maker for the state, so they enforce it 24/7/365. And it DOES NOT add points to your license in Connecticut, it's a $37 fine (I think) for the first offense and it jumps up a lot, maybe $80 or so if they catch you again.

Have that here too. I think it's nationwide.

The Click-It-or-Ticket campaign is nationwide.

For use in a private vehicle less than 10,000 lb. GVW, radar detectors are legal in every state in the US except Virginia, Washington D.C., and Oklahoma (where ownership and use is legal, but you can be cited for having a radar detector while being cited for another infraction, i.e. speeding).

In Canada, radar detectors are legal in British Columbia, Alberta, and New Brunswick. In every other province, they are illegal to possess as well as use.

What violation will affect your insurance and how varies by state in the US. In Oregon and Washington state, where I live, radar detectors are completely legal, and a no-seatbelt ticket is a non-moving violation that does not affect your driving record.

Regardless, I always wear my seatbelt. I find it more comfortable and it has saved my life in the past. But if other people foolishly don't want to wear theirs, it's their funeral and I could not care less. Nothing like reading in the newspaper about the big head-on accident on US 26 and seeing that all 5 people who died weren't wearing their seatbelt (while all the people who did survive were wearing theirs). Darwin in action. IMO, we should not interfere with the laws of nature.

In Connecticut it adds two points to your license.

You serious??? Wow, I better start wearing my seatbelt then.

P.S. I do have a no seatbelt ticket 3 years ago. It was actually a speeding ticket that was reduced to no-seatbelt. The ticket didn't affect my insurance rate. However, I was cited in NY (I live in CT) so that could have something to do with it.
