seasoning a cast iron skillet

Ok, i dont think i seasoned my cast iron skillet properly when i first got it because now theres like black flakes coming off of it. I think the flakes are from stuff I've cooked before.

Whats the best way to restore it and season it again? or should i just put another coating of oil and let it bake for a while?

I always took a paper towel and smeared crisco all over the inside of it....then put it in the oven at 200-250 degrees for about 5-6 hours.

I just load it up with bacon grease/salt and put in the oven for hours

try to be careful the first couple time cooking and not burn anything. eventually it will build up a non-stick coating of tasty goodness.

Scrub it out thoroughly, cook bacon in it.

..that'll work. I seasoned mine wit olive oil at a low simmer.

Yes , scrub the skillet lightly.

Add a layer cake of salt mixed with olive oil. heat the pan on simmer for an hour. Repeat.

Any type of fat will work, but this almost guarantees no cross food tasting since oilive oil and salt are so basic.

**EDIT**
Just as spidey07 said, the oven works quite well as well.
