Seasonic X650 for 4.4Ghz i7 920?

I am building a gaming machine (see sig, rig3)and I plan on Overclocking it ~ 4.4Ghz, running on water, possibly 2 5870s, either a Vraptor or an Intel SSD drive with 1 backup drive. Will the 54a 12v Seasonic X650 be enough for it?

4.4 Ghz is pretty extreme and the i7's ramp up in power with extreme overclocks.

Check the graph at toms hardware. They only go up to 4.0 Ghz but look how the power of the i7 ramps up quickly. Going from 3.8Ghz to 4.0Ghz the peak power literally jumps over 100w. The power levels aren't comparable to you rig since they only run one video card and their overclock is not as extreme. Your going to be at 4.4 Ghz with two 5870's cards. Also do you plan on overclocking the two video cards?

I would be looking at something like this:

Thank you for the informative reply dualsmp! I will rethink my PSU choice  😉

I'd go at least for the X-750

Otherwise, if you want modular XFX Black Edition, Corsair HX850/HX750, Seasonic M12D 850 or 750

Not so Modular..or not modular at all...Antec TPN 750, PC P&C Silencer 910, Corsair HX850, Antec Signature 850.

Heck...why don't you take one of the Revolution 950W out of rig 1 or rig 2 and slap it in rig 3 and then buy the X-650 for one of those.

If I knew that the Revo 950w was compatible I would do the exact thing. The problem though is the Evo 1250w with a S/N < 95xxxxxxx is not compatible with the Classified board and I've tried but sorta given up hope on finding out over the 950w... I asked in the EVGA forums but i got no straight answer... and both my S/Ns' on the Revos are well under 95xxxxxxx

I think 750w PSU would probably be running in reserve power of the PSU. If you look and see anandtechs test they pull 664w from the wall at 3.33 GHz on an i7 . I'd estimate your going to be 200w over that figure or around 864w from the wall at 4.4 Ghz. If you want, make it a round number 900w from the wall. Even the most efficient 750w PSU would over the limit. 900*.90 efficiency= 810w (DC). I'd say you need a minimum of 850w PSU. I'd probably go a little higher though just for some cushion.

You can't figure your efficiency like that. You would have to know the efficiency of the PSU that anandtech is using...not to mention the inaccuracy of the Kill-A-watt I believe they use to take power readings. I believe they use a PC P&C Turbo-Cool 1200W....which is probably 82% efficient at best at the load they are pulling...more like 80%. So they may be pulling 544W DC...or less.

But OCing a gaming exclusive rig to 4.4Ghz is pretty much superfluous anyway, you will get to a diminishing return for gaming at one point anyway.

Yes I got ahead of myself there. It would be closer to 750w from the wall. Maybe 800w. A 750w PSU would work fine, 850w PSU for some cushion.

I am considering the HX850 Corsair. It got great reviews on the JG sight. Again, I will liquid cool it, run 2 gpus, and overclock ~ 4gh-4.4Ghz on a 24/7 basis... what do you think?

it'd b so cheeseball to have a corsair case and a corsair PSU - like im a fan er something  ... that's the thought i need to weed out

its like wearing your own bands shirt at a gig you play out at - lol
