I have a Seasonic Prime Gold 550w PSU with a noisy fan rattle. Has anyone sent something like this in to Seasonic and did they fix it / how long was the process? Knowing I will be down my PSU, I went to Best Buy (only thing close) and was hoping to find a decent 550-650w unit, but the only thing they had that has good reviews and is reviewed to be silent is the Corsair RM850x so picked that up even though it is complete overkill. Not even sure which PSU I should keep in my system once the Seasonic returns assuming they will fix it.

I sent a PSU into Seasonic back in 2012. They said to send it in original packing with no accessories. They shipped it back in a padded bag :( It arrived dented, so they sent another.

Took about two weeks all together.

Definitely decide if it is worth your time & money to send the RMA back in. They took about two weeks for me too (about two years ago), and like was pointed out no accessories either way. The replacement worked for a few months then died too. I mean, when you are RMA'ing a 6.5 year old PSU and they pull another (likely repaired unit) off the shelf I feel like you are rolling the dice.

The RM850x is a great unit and it's already working in your computer. I'd RMA the 550 then keep it as a backup, probably. Unless you are willing to return the RM850x within the 30 day window, which I guess is your right but I personally wouldn't. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, I agree. I did RMA the Seasonic (12 bucks to ship) and I will just keep the Corsair. When the Seasonic returns I will just keep it as a back-up. Personally, I wouldn't feel right returning the Corsair, besides that thing is absolutely silent...

I have been really pleased with the RM Corsair units I’ve used lately, I try to use a variety so I never get hit by one issue but I’ve used those “where it counts” like a mission critical work laser PC and my dad and sons PCs and had zero issues and yes - silence! :)

So that just proved to be a big waste of time and money. Seasonic sent me back a replacement PSU that has a rattle-sounding fan that is just as loud if not louder.... Disappointing to say the least. Good news is my new Corsair is dead-silent and I can just forget about using/recommending Seasonic going forward.

Hmm I would contact them again about this. Not time to give up...

Agreed.

I'd contact their customer service to see if they will fix the issue before swearing them off forever.

All companies will have a few duds slip through their RMA departments, and from what I've seen over the years from other users here, Seasonic is pretty good handling that stuff.

So recent update:

I did contact Seasonic and they had me record the sound and email them the audio file. Based on that, they approved a 'return' which was really having me break the warranty seal, remove and cut the label and destroy the PSU beyond repair and send them pictures of all those steps. So I did that and they had their US location send me another unit. Well, guess what... Yes, the new unit has the same loud rattling fan.

You may think I am just sensitive to fans, but this is a noise that they were able to verify on the first unit I sent in, then by the audio recording of the next unit they sent me. Makes me wonder what else are they not checking before they send out RMA units to customers?

At this point I don't think I can justify spending more time on this and I will just cut my losses with Seasonic and their warranties... Besides, it just killed me to destroy a perfectly good PSU that just needed a new fan - see picture :(

Maybe you'll have luck with another brand.

The odds of receiving three defective (loud, rattling fan) in a row has to be astronomically low. I've had my Prime unit for several years now, and haven't had an issue like you've described.

I would have thought the same thing about it being astronomically low until it actually happened to me, but I don't know what their process is for refurbishing units to fill RMA's and if they used previously returned units with fan issues or they got a bad lot of fans they use - now I am entering the land of speculation which is really pointless...

I am positive they would still try to help me fix this issue but at this point I will just keep it as an emergency back-up if I need one until I can buy another PSU brand/series that isn't known to have had some fan issues. Once I started looking into this I discovered I wasn't alone in having this problem in regard to a clicky Seasonic fan that is.

Luckily, my new Corsair RM850x is dead silent and so is the new Superflower Leadex III Gold 650w I put in my son's build late last year. - even when the fans do spin. I don't mind a low fan hum, its just the rattling/clicking sound that grates my teeth because it really stands out above all my case and cpu fans.
