Are the complaints about coil whine legit ? I wonder if some folks are more sensitive to high frequency or if there is variance between units ?

There are enough complaints and responses from SeaSonic to make me think it's legit. But SeaSonic claims you can make the whine go away with some ErP settings in the Bios, and at $70 this thing is a steal. Worst case, Newegg is pretty good with returns/exchanges. At retail price though, I'd probably go with something else.
