I was looking for a good window air conditioner to but in my 2-year-old son's bedroom for the summer and found that Sears has a Kenmore 5300BTU on sale for $149 (reg. $209) until 5/17. This is Sears Item #02272056000(Mfr. Model #72056)and has a remote control, automatic temp control (thermostat) and an EER rating of 10.8. I bought a Kenmore model 71055 two years ago (similar unit - 5600BTU) and it was been working GREAT!

As a bonus - some states have an energy rebate program where the give you $$ if you trade in an older A/C unit and buy one that is Energy Star compliant (this one is @ 10.8 EER). I took advantage of this in NY state 2 years ago and got a $50 rebate for trading in an older unit that I bought at a yard sale for $35 two years earlier (bought the 71055 with an EER of 11.0).

I have a similar model for my master bedroom, but it uses knobs and doesn't have a remote, but the room is 14x16 and it cools it off really well. We've had it for 3 years now and all I've done is cleaned the filter and blow it out every spring and it keeps running smooth. Hoping to do central air though soon, so this will go in my computer room to drop it down a few more degrees. :)

Hey - stop it! You're gonna make me jealous!!! :)

Since my last quote for a full furnace upgrade w/central air installation was around $6000+ , I think I will stick with the $150 room air conditioner option ;) (Plus my vintage 1951 furnace has no electronic parts to fail, just a MOOKLY big heat exchanger, gas control vavle, and blower/motor assembly - I can fix any of that except for an exchanger crack).

Rossman - I am curious............how much does the central air add to your electric bill? (& where do you live?) I live in upstate NY and don't have too many days out of the year that I would consider "unbearable" that would justify the expense to add central air. Now if I lived in Florida or Texas.......different story.

The nice thing about these smaller window units with the energy-star rating (ultra-high efficiency) is they are easy on the wallet to run. The 71055 I bought 2 years ago (11.0 EER) only adds $10-14 / month to my electric bill and we run it most nights in the summer.

Higher EER = more efficient. I think anything over 10.0 gets an "Energy Star" rating.

My parents have this in their bedroom and it works pretty well. I find myself sometimes turning it off an on cause it gets too cold. (I tend not to use the auto temp feature). :)

I've used AC's with the digital controls before and didn't like the fact that if the power goes out, the controls would reset to OFF.
