I was bored ealier so I put in an online app to Sears. Right now I am at Staples and have been there for about 2 years. I just wanted to see what they had to offer vs. Staples. Any employees know about discount/wages? I work about 30 hours a week now, and was also wondering about commision based postions? If anyone has any info and is willing to share that would be great. Thanks

bubbadu, It depends on what dept. at Sears you work at, some departments have an hourly salary, while others are on commission. I know some people who work at Sears in a commission-based position and earn over 50K, while others I know work w/ an hourly salary and make what you do at Staples. I hope this helps a bit :)

Working at sears SUCKS. At least it did when I worked there in the middle and late 70's.

I had just gotten out of the Marines, and sears wasn't much differant. Mostly ran by Ex military back then and they thought they could treat you like you were still a boot.

I didn't care for it much. ;)

Yeah thats what I figured... thanks for the tips guys.. I have an interview on friday... I figured it wouldnt hurt to see what they can offer me. With the bonus @ Staples, I am making about 10 bucks an hour, which is pretty good around here. Unless they can offer me comission theres no way I could consider it.

I put an application in at Sears a couple weeks ago, online. Got a call at 9:40AM on July 24th in reference to the application. They asked if I'd be interested in part time. I said no, but my son would be. They asked if he had an application in, and I said no. They said a position on the floor was available. I had my son fill out an online application. At 2:00 that afternoon, Sears called and scheduled him for an interview the following Monday (yesterday). From what I hear, five people interviewed, and my son got the job! He took the drug test yesterday and is scheduled for orientation tomorrow.

I was so happy he got this job. He was already scheduled for orientation with Arby's, which I REALLY didn't want him to have to do. I figured a job in retail would be much better. I used to work at this same Sears, at the Auto Center, about 30 years ago, and have nothing but great memories. It's within easy walking distance of our current home, too.

He was told he could boost his wages by getting people to sign up for the Sears charge. The HR guy showed him one fellow had signed up 107 people for the last pay period. That's cool. At least he doesn't have to push extended warranties!

I'd sure like to hear from other sears employees. Tell me if this observation is true: When you're at a fast food place, the employees are running around like maniacs. Even on off hours, they're kept busy. When in Kmart, Walmart, HomeDepot or Lowes, the employees are pretty busy. However, when I enter Sears, it's so laid back I can't believe it. Once in a while there's a line at a checkout or something, but generally the employees are just bullshitting here and there. Of course, Christmas is another story, but it's generally an easy place to work, no?

It's RETAIL!

You have been warned... if your manager likes you and you are in commission-based area, they will give you more responsibility. That could be a good thing or a bad thing. I BS when I'm running my store next to Sears but I generally don't see too many people working over there but they're still kinda nice. Nothing like Nordstroms or any other customer service or commission-based store where people will lick your feet if you're feet are too dry to put on that pricey shoe.

I would say so, but it really can depend on the manager and other environmental variables. I worked as a cashier in Electronics for Christmas when I turned 16, and they liked me enough they brought me back as a commissioned salesperson in Hardware (tools, not computers). I made good money for a 16-18yr old ($10/hr+ depending on how hard I worked), learned a lot about tools and construction, and had a great time.

Apparently tool sales is no longer a commissioned department, which is a bigtime :(. I went there the other day, spent $500 on tools, and had to walk over to Sporting Goods to get help from an employee over there. They are still commissioned, so she was really helpful; it's unfortunate to see the decline in a department I used to really enjoy working at, though. :p

Thanks Zim!

I don't care if he gets into commissioned sales or not. I don't care if he works in stocking or on the sales floor. I'm just glad he got in there instead of fast food. It was laid back when I worked there, and it doesn't seem any different today.

Well, he has a 4 hour orientation today with just one other new hire. He'll have to wear a tie, which is something I've NEVER had to do in my life. Hey, we get a 10% discount now, too! I wonder if I can stack that on price matches? ;)

Years ago I worked in the sears Auto department. I usually stay at a job at least 3 months no matter what just so i can say I gave it the ole good try. I quit after 3 weeks.
Before I was even hired I was told, this is a right to work state, we can fire you any time for no reason. Of course I knew no good lawyer would sue under state law, and yes you do have to give a reason, esp. if I sued under federal law. So basiclly just gave the whole BS of I am the boss do as I say or I will fire you for no good reason, your at sears now get used to it.
The tools we were told to use never worked right, but I got blamed when soemthing went wrong. Like a torque stick for a honda that would NOT tighten up the lug nuts enough. But we HAD to use the sticks or get fired. The goggles that we were told we had to wear were not 100% clear. So they gave me headaches. Also being the new guy I got the oldest machine, which was known for eating rims. Then when I scratched a rim I was asked why I did that.
rolleye.gif

Then one week I paid my tution, cc's, and some other bills so I was BROKE. So friday came and we were all waiting for our checks. They never came. I have $0 to my name because I paid all my bills and KNEW I was getting a check. There answer, it will be here on monday, maybe. Well monday does not put gas in my car on friday, or food in my stomach for 3 days.

Every store is going to be different, so give it at least 2 weeks. If it is like the hell I went through, QUIT!!!!

Tire buster, eh? I used to work in the tire and exhaust storage area above the garage. I learned how to throw a tire down the shute, so when it hit the bottom, it would fly out at pretty good velocity. Did you like that? :p

I would recommend NOT working for Sears

During my early teen years I worked for Radio Shack, Sears, and Best Buy.

Of the three, I enjoyed and got the most experiance from Radio Shack. Best Buy paid me the best (tech)
and had the best discount.

Sears is twisted on a corporate level. I sold computers there and have many horror stories about people
stealing commission, or people getting fired for absolutely NOTHING, etc. etc.
When they fired a good friend of mine for stealing when I know he didn't (I was with him closing that night
and he would have told me if he had..) I put in my 2 week. Then they tried to fire me for insubordination.

I made a huge ass deal with the regional manager, and worked out an agreement where I wasn't fired, but wouldn't
work the rest of the two week.

Possibly every Sears is different, but the corporate level experiances that I had were bad.

I highly recommend trying to get a job at Radio Shack. He will learn a lot more, get better pay,
and it looks better later on down the road.

Fired over nothing? When I worked there it was a major undertaking to fire people. I KNOW they wouldn't tolerate stealing, though.

Sears does have a lot of BS policies which vary from store to store. At my store, they implemented a policy that you couldn't walk from the store out into the mall.. to get to the rest of the mall, you had to walk all the way outside and around to another mall entrance. Also, a majority of the commission paying jobs have changed to hourly based in the past year. How well you'll like a job at Sears probably depends on which department you work. Typically guys only work electronics and hardware. Both require you to know a decent amount of info about the products you're selling. Both used to pay commission in my store, but that changed last August. When they were still commission based, it would take a lot to get fired, because they were only barely paying you. Now that it's hourly based, they are much more strict, and you can really tell the attitudes of the employees have changed.

I worked for Sears for 5 years during High School and College in the electronics dept which is straight commision. I averaged about $500 a week working part time. They also paid 75% of my tuition since I went for a business degree.

Overall a great place to work if you don't mind the occasionaly A-Hole customer.

He just got back from first day of orientation. The fellow who started with him happens to be a guy he knew back in grade school. He likes it so far. Says he'll be "shadowing" people on the sales floor next week. I, on the other hand, just started working with my brother on some construction/renovation type work. I'd rather be doing what my son is, but I'm making a HELL of a LOT more money doing this.

My son has zero work experience, so this is just peachy. He can walk to the store from here, too. He said there will be some kind of extra 10% employee discount day on August 17th. Would I be allowed to apply that extra discount to a price matched item? He hasn't covered that in training yet.

Sears employees have a great deal of control over what they can do.. if he knows how to price match and use a discount by then, he can do it.

Super! He just brought home paperwork for opening a checking account with direct deposit at a local bank. Not sure if he can do that, since he's not even 18, but it's worth a shot, because they give you $100.00 for opening it! My wife works at a bank that offers free checking, but no dice on that $100.00 part.

Believe me, I can't teach him much about retail stuff, but I'll tell him EVERYTHING I know about price matching!
