Truthfully, it depends on your experience with Maxtors....I bought one of these back in March, my friend just opened it and it was dead. No warranty either, since the drive was manufactured in Sep 2003. The warranty was half up when I purchased it brand new. In my opinion that's makes any drive with a warranty longer than one year more attractive. Especially since you have no way of knowing how long ago the drive was manufactured until you get it, online that is.

good deal to me. no rebates is a big plus, and it's cheaper per gig than any other drive I've seen!

This is true. I personally plan to put Seagate drives in my next machine, but Maxtor IS one of the better brands out there, and this IS a very good price, so I figured some people might want to know.


I've been running a Maxtor 60GB here for about 2.5 years without a hitch.

The warranty starts with the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture. If you still have the receipt you can RMA it and Maxtor will replace it. They have the best RMA policy. Just call them up and they will send you a replacement. You then have 30 days to send the defective drive back.

This is what they say:

When does the warranty period start?

The start of the warranty period is the documented date of the customer's purchase of the product from Maxtor's authorized reseller. In the absence of a documented purchase date, the start of the warranty period will be the date Maxtor originally shipped the product from its point of manufacture to Maxtor's customer.

its dead damn! says "Boxed Hard Drives Kits - 160GB - 250GB - 7200 RPM" on the site kinda weird.

Link says 69.99 for me. Damn good price, but I don't usually like to get anything under 200gb unless it's going to be a boot drive, and I don't need one for that. Plus, the one year warranty is kind of a hosing. Seems like every computer part I buy with a year warranty blows after 13 or 14 months.

Yep, back to 69.99. Limit one per household. $92.25 shipped from Newegg. Man, I don't need it, but it's SO CHEAP.
