Searching for people's personal information

I've been put in a position to interview prospective employees, and I've been asked to do background checks on all of them. The boss wants to know three things: Criminal background, Educational background, and previous job history. I've been looking for a website where I can get this information (using the applicant's SSN and other information) but haven't had much luck. Does anyone know where I can (legally) find what I'm looking for? Apparently a lot of applicants lie about having a Master's degree in one subject or another, I guess I need some kind of college database. Criminal, I think I can use Pacer, but I'm not sure if you have to know exactly what county of which state the person may have done something wrong in (still looking into this). And I guess it would have to be some kind of government database that would have previous employment info. Any help would be most appreciated.

OP, BRB is the perfect place for you to start.

ETA - If you need to verify an applicant's education history and/or employment history, you will need to get that information from the applicant and contact each institution/employer yourself to verify that the information that the applicant gave you is correct.

Also, make sure you have their DOB for criminal checks. When doing a criminal check you'll also need to determine if you want to check on a county level, state level, or federal level. Statewide criminal checks are not available in all states. Industry standard in doing criminal checks is to check countywide where the person has lived, worked, and went to school at for the last 7-10 years.

Thanks. I'm surprised it's not possible to somehow check employment history if you have the applicant's SSN. I was hoping to find a "Carfax" for people, I gues there is no one stop shopping for the information I'm looking for.

Thanks Jadow and FoBoT also, you got me started in the right direction.
