So, I am searching for a new laptop, needless to say (given the title) and I want something that will allow me to record music, do school work, and just do the job a computer should do i guess.
I was sort of looking into macs but I am 'open-minded' to whatever you guys think would do best for me. I was curious to know what kind of processors, video/sound car I should look into, and what overall model would fit my needs best. any help would be much appereciated

By 'maps' do you mean 'macs'? If so I think you're on the right track. The macbook is a good thing. Not that slim one though...

If you go for something else I would recommend you don't try to get the most powerful processor and graphics as possible for the money (like you would for a PC). Companies squeeze way too much into 'gaming' laptops these days and they end up burning your lap for half an hour then running out of battery. Go for low voltage/high efficiency platforms.

If you do not plan to do any real gaming on the laptop, any new laptop should work for you. I would make sure it at least had 2GB of RAM on the PC side. I personally like Dell and IBM laptops.

I like Dell and IBM too,I think you can get some great buys with Dell, especially if you use a discount code etc..also sometimes you can get a further discount by haggling over the phone when speaking with a Dell salesman,ie" I got this listed at $700 from your website online with the following hardware, can you do me a better deal over the phone?"...watchout for the free memory upgrade offers Dell do now and then too,I got a free 2GB to 3GB upgrade.

Btw AJER39 welcome to the AT forums.
