How about:

"I'm overqualified for this position, but I love your company; I only want you to hire me for this if I've got an opportunity to prove to you that if you hire me full-time I'll make a lot more money for you than the next guy over"

I think that's what you should have said.

I think that's what you should have said.

I would be more interested in this position if the temp->perm option was there and into a department that I was more interested in, but the recruiting agency specifically told me not to give any hints that I'm interested in a permanent position or ask about it. I think this recruiting agency specializes in only short-term staffers and companies are interested in that.

Opportunities are what you make, not what are handed to you.

I think the agency does not have your good in mind; but rather their own income. Ignoring their directives in a high-risk opportunity for something better makes a lot of sense to me.

But everyone's got their own level of risk aversion.
