try distributed folding, you can work offline for many days, even weeks (but you have to upload before the protien changeover)

I'd love to recommend Folding@Home, but it is best with an always-on (or demand dial) connection, and because of the WU deadlines, it is best if left to run constantly. :(

Well, i know your not a big fan of SETI(though, that's exactly what you want :p), so how about ECC2? No need to download work, the client creates it's own work. You just need to upload results every now & again.

rather than give you a bunch of links for ecc2 I'll give you a link to my stats the navbar on the left has links to many ecc2 ressources.
in short ecc2 doesn't require a permanent connection. Download the client from here, edit the config file to use your email address and set the server to 127.0.0.1 and it will keep results locally in the ecc2-109.pnd file. You can send points by changing the config file agin or using the manual upload page.
If you have questions try to drop by irc.eCompute.org/6667 #ecc2 and someone will usually be arround to help.
Cheers,
Marc

Since i'm new to ECC2, if you go to the Deception.net DC forums & ask there then they can give you all the info you need.
I'm crunching for the Deception.net mini team of Team AnandTech.
