I have been searching for almost an hour for a thread posted a couple of days ago in OffTopic. 🙁

I believe we had search like this when Anandtech was using an older version of Fusetalk. Can we have something like that now? As of now, we can sarch for the keyword that is in the title of the thread only. Can we have something like searching the body of the thread also?

I think it is very important and can also prevent lot of reposts.

BTW, subscriber, it's cheap for the amount of money and free stuff this site gets me.

 
I can understand only letting subscribers do full message body searches, but the search function is so crippled for us non-subscribers that it is totally useless. The main problem is that it can not search for separate words ("LCD color quality" will not find a thread named "How is the color quality of new LCDs"). This "issue" often forces me to go over to other large, well known tech sites if I want to search through postings to get any information on a particular subject. :frown:
 
Having almost no search abilities people tend to repost rather than find answers in older threads.

That's what the original poster asked, but many (including myself) are asking for nothing more than separated keyword searching in the thread titles only, for non-subscribers. It'd sure cut down on the number of reposts, since the search feature would actually be useful and therefore more people would (hopefully) use it. Oh well, I'm sure we'll never get it, so I'll just content myself to find important info elsewhere. 🙁

The problem is that the advanced searches take up vast amounts of bandwidth and AT's servers already seem stretched to the limit. The subscribers get those features because they are paying for server upkeep.
 
advanced search may not necessarily cut down number of reposts since some dont bother searching at all, and others search, but they search for the wrong keyword so it doesnt show up

Thats totally wrong. Advanced feature will definately cut down the reposts. Some people do search before posting

Why does searching take bandwidth? If anything it should take CPU cycles from the DB server. Bandwidth only comes into play when displaying the results of the search. And I don't believe you are the all-knowing god of AT that knows how "stretched" anandtech servers are.

Pay for it. I am a subscriber and the search feature is probably the only perk I use and it helps me justify paying for the subccription. Your problem should be that people label their post with things like "please help","problem", and "is this right". Maybe your request should be for the mods to lock vague titles instead of asking to be given something that cost very little to begin with. Yes I know every thing is vague in OT.

no it is not "totally" wrong. it may or may not cut down. some people do search, but there are also those who post then search just because they want to be the first one to post a thread on some breaking news. and then there are times when people search for the wrong thing, like i said before. so like i said, it may not necessarily cut it down. i am not saying it won't, i'm just saying it won't necessarily do its job.
