whenever i do a search on any website, if i use the back buttom to go back the search results after i'm done with one, it will give a "The page cannot be displayed" messege. it is so annoying. i have to search again everytime i want to see a different result site. i believe there must be a setting in the IE option, but i just don't know where. if it's not that simple, does that mean i have to reinstall IE? please give me some advises... TIA!!!

Yes, it's possible that it's some wierd problem with IE, but it's possible that your search page was hijaacked and it's trying to take you to a wierd place when you hit the back button, or else the search engine you're using has a problem on their end.

What search engine are you using? Or does this happen with all of them?

I'd do a spyware scan just to make sure something hasn't hijaacked your browser. Download Microsoft's free Anti-Spyware app (there's a link on Microsoft's home page).

After you scan it, reset your home page and search page to the defaults in case they were hijaacked. In IE go to Tools->Internet Options->Programs->Reset Web Settings

You should also check your HOSTS file to see if there's any redirects inm there:

Find your HOSTS file and make sure the ONLY entry is:
127.0.0.1 localhost
(any lines starting with a # sign are just remarks and are ignored).

Your HOSTS file is located here:
Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

SCROLL DOWN through the HOSTS file to make sure there are no other entries!!! Many spyware add the entries after a long blank area in the file so you don't see it unless you scroll down.

Hope this helps...

i was not talking about search engine. search engines such as google and yahoo work fine. however for example, if i do a search here at anand for a topic of "IE error", there will be like 50+ results. then i click on one of them. the problem comes up when i'm done w/ the one i just clicked and use on the back buttom to see other results.

i don't think it's spyware, but thank you very much for your help.

You may be running a restrictive security setting on your Internet zone in IE (Tools, Options, Security), and it might be restricting what type of cookies are allowed. Are you also having to continuously log back in with usernames and passwords?

I believe that search topics are stored on your system as a cookie, if your system doesn't allow them, it would show some form of error page (although mine usually states that the data cannot be recovered / refreshed, something like that.)

As Creston mentioned could be security or cookie settings, or firewall as mentioned by Prod. As a test disable your firewall and set your IE security and cookie settings to default ( may want to create a Restore Point first).
