Search for free-or-software that can start PC from cold-dead and/or shutdown, me not present; settings configurable....

Hopefully, I can find a freeware to do this; must be something out there along these lines...for the simple operation of firing the computer from cold-dead OFF to ON, without
me present, with settings one can set for daily, weekly, whatever, fire-ups at specific times. Similarly, a shut off one can set for every day, weekly, whatever, etc. at a certain time.

hrm, my BIOS has the options for turning it on, and you can use a shutdown script and put it in task scheduler to turn it off...

don't think you'll be able to find software that will turn your computer on seeing as how the software would need to be loaded

Thank you for your insight, Mr. Joemonkey, that BIOS tinkering may work.

A lot of people are not yet, or not comfortable at all, doing acrobatics in their BIOS, however. Perhaps the many have become a bit over-reliant on too much just-pop-it-in-and-go software, sacrificing learning these things for the ease with which much software is offered them. They're not comfortable tinkering much in the BIOS.

Any leads by anyone in these forums on the freeware/software approach for starting and stopping PC without having to be present will be much appreciated....

You may be able to use Wake on lan or wake on ring to turn it on remotely over a network. If your bios has a "RTC Alarm Resume" feature you could set it to boot up at the same time every day.

You can't turn on your computer with installed software. The system has to be running in order to execute a program. If you want your computer to turn on at certain times, you'll have to go into the BIOS and look for an option to do so. I used to have my computer turn on at 9:00 AM every day.

I have to ask why can't you use Scheduled Tasks?

Edit:changed Task Manager to Scheduled Tasks(I have a brain cloud)

Goto a local drugstore and get a outlet timer. Cost you $3 and it will come on and/or go off whenever you choose. You just have to have it so that your bios powers on after a power outage kind of thing. Cant remember the exact setting atm 🙂

Can you say: screwed up hard drive?

:/

As has been mentioned there is no software to turn your computer on automatically, since, as was also mentioned, the software must be running in order to execute some task, but the computer needs to be on for the software to be running... Other than checking the BIOS for this option I think your alternatives are pretty limited.

You could try the timer thing (I wouldn't)
I suppose the WOL is an option, if you are networked or have other remote access to the PC and your board supports it. (no experience here)
You could hire someone to come into your house and turn on your PC when you want. (Turning off via the scheduler should be fairly easy)
You could also try to convince any neighborhood poltergiests to turn on your computer at a specified time, if you are uncomfortable with hiring some guy/gal to come into your home to push your power button.

I'm not trying to be a smart@$$ (okay, so I am, a little. Just joking with ya 😉) but the bottom line is that it can't be done via software on the same computer you are trying to power on.

You should be able to shut down with software, but there i absolutely no way in hell that you will get a bit of software to run on your computer to turn it on, because if it's off, how is the software going to be running??

Most BIOSes have the RTC Alarm Resume, which would be the ONLY way for the computer to turn on at a certain time, unless you go for the idea of the timer, which i wouldn't recommend.

Confused

Does it have to be from a cold shutdown?

I'm using Win2K "Scheduled Tasks"
"Power" setting to "hibernate" after 1 minute.
I'm using this to record "TV" shows while I'm away.

My computer starts, runs "VituralVCR" for 1 hour 5 min and then hibernates.

I have a alarm clock software in my bedroom PC set to ring 6:30am but have my system set to supend to ram after a few minutes to avoid the noisy fans.

I have my Bios timer set to wake up the computer at 6:15 am so that the software alarm clock will work.

I just wish the bios has more timer options for multiple scedules different times

peace
