Search Engine Results - What Based On?

I've been told that search engines rank some pages partially based on the actual filename of the page... ie if you were searching for something about 'computers' then having a page with filename 'computers.html' will help boost that particular sites ranking.

Any truth to this? Sounds pretty stupid...

Filename is important, but mainly for alphabetization: "Andy's computers" would be displayed before "computers."

So if you want to optimize your site, use early letters in the alphabet, and try to get key words in not just the page file name but the page html title as well.

I'd wouldn't worry about meta tags though. Google owns the world now, and as soon as AOL signs up later this summer, they'll own at least two or three worlds, so I wouldn't worry about Altavista and the like. I get 98% of my searches (the site below) from google/yahoo, so bothering with all the other optimizations I did was clearly a waste of time.
