See, this is what I don't quite get. The top marginal tax rate in 1955 (the Eisenhower era) was 91%. In 1982 (and most of the Reagan era) it was 50%. Were we a socialist/communist utopia then, too?

There is more debt now. If the Fed were to raise the federal funds rate to a non-insane level of 10%, then the interest on the Federal debt would be $1.5Tn. Historical Federal fund levels are about 10/3%, so that would be $500Bn if the Federal funds rate was raised to that and 10/3% is still a relatively low interest rate. We can't afford that shit and Obama would never sell off one bit of the national parks system and the national armory at the right prices.

Interest on 10 year T bonds is 2%. US inflation rate is 3%. Right now, we actually are making a profit off of our own debt. You're right that we can't do that forever, but it's certainly worth doing now to keep the economy from falling into a much longer recession/depression. It's worth noting that we are in the longest economic stretch this country has had without a real depression, and modern monetary policy is a large part of why.

Iran is using gold as a way around US sanctions, and because it's own currency is crumbling (also due to the sanctions). To presume that Iran is somehow doing this because they forsee the world going back to the gold standard is hilarious.

It costs us more to treat the gravely ill, than to keep everyone healthy.

Legal or not, if we kept our under-the-table workers in a state of good health, it saves us all money.

How? Twofold.

1. They are paid jack. The reason that AZ and others SCREAM about illegals, but really turn a blind eye to their agricultural "help" is because cracking down on it would not only cost money, but would cause their price of production to go WAY up. If we want the $4.99 chinese food special, we still need those $2/hr delivery guys.

2. It costs more to treat a guy that has serious problems that has come into the emergency room and needs to be treated rather than just keeping him healthy in the first place. Also, providing things like immunizations and other services (flu shots), we reduce the base of disease refuges (there is a term for this... places where disease "hangs out" because of lack of immunization).

But, all people see is the initial cost. It is the same in everything.

You re-roof a house correctly, you get 20 years worth of weatherproofing. You get Joe Schmoe up there with a bucket of tar and a broom, you will probably be calling him back in 3-5 and you risk water damage in the meantime.

The right thing may cost more in the short run, but, IF DONE RIGHT, helps everyone in the long run.

But he does make a point. It is the end time of the America as we know it. Hannity is part of a subgroup of Americans who have not assimilated into modern, mainstream American society. The election of Barack Obama was a shock to them. Many likely thought "How can that thing enter the White House?" They think Obama is a fluke. However, if Obama is re-elected, it would completely change America and force them to assimilate as they become aware of the new reality. It's a sign of changed times.
