Seagates sata 300Gb 7200.09 retail or 320Gb 7200.10 oem Same price Which one?

Which one would you guys get. It is for a new build so won't have the cables already.

The 320Gb oem is a 7200.10 with perpindicular technology
The 300 Gb retail is the 7200.09 without

Both cost $89 shipped

I'd go with the 7200.10. Apparently some guys have had issues with the 7200.09.

Well don't know if there is a longer warranty or general life expectancy on the retail compared to the oem. Also want to see how important the perpindicular recording technology and the additional stuff in the retail box is. Like buying the sata cables. I guess the 20 extra Gb isn't that big of a deal, but overall don't think its a staright forward decision.

believe it or not, OEM has 5 years while retail has less.

All Seagate's drives have 5 year warranties, so I guess I'll not believe it.

my bad, i was looking at their retail externals and retail notebook drives, which seem to state 1 yr warranty.

still dont see any reason to get the retail esp if its an older generation drive

Better hard drive with more efficient technology or slightly slower drive with slightly less efficient technology?


I think this is one of those questions in life you're going to have to work out the answer to yourself, in order to become a better man.

Haha thats pretty funny roguestar, seriously. But come on its not entirely accurate.

Its newer technology not fully vetted or longterm tested compared to proven technology with a longer history.

I guess I just think I may be mising soemthing. Due to work provided computers I haven't built a new system since my P300 OCed to 450 BX6 MB (still running nicely).

Anyone know if the oem units have been failing at a quicker rate etc...?

In my experience OEM just means "no fancy box, no cables, no manuals" and sometimes, a shorter warranty (but in this case they're all the same). Why not go for the 7200.10 and be a pioneer, and try it out for us, then? :p

I just got the 7200.10 oem, installed on an Asus P5B Dlx. Works great. I agree with everyone else, this is almost a no brainer: get the newer technology and higher capacity! there really is no reason to get an older drive with less capacity if it is going to cost you the same.

If I read your post correctly, the only reason you are considering the retail version are the manuals and cables. Well, the manual is not really required (if you need documentation you can find it at Seagate's product page). You mentioned this is a new build, so I assume you will be getting a new Motherboard. the SATA cables you need will almost certainly come with your MoBo.

Get the 7200.10 :beer:

Thx for all the help guys. I went with the newegg 320Gb oem 7200.10 over the frys retail 300Gb 7200.09. The push was the extra $5 off code from newegg that came out today and all your guys input and advice. Looking back probably over thought this.

I purchase two 7200.10 320 GBs through NewEgg. One died on me within 2 months. Good thing for RMA.

It's always a risk to buy new technology. I purchased a LOT of those 7200.10's over the last six months. So far, so good, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Not trying to say the 7200.10s are bad. You'll come across dead drives with all manufacturers :)
