I just purchased a Seagate X15 the 15k 2nd generation model. Would someone tell me how much hotter this model gets relative to any other 10k SCSI model? Would Active cooling only be sufficient? Or could I get away with passive cooling? Or would an enclosure with a fan work best?

The 36-LP actually runs hotter then it's predecessor the original X15, you may well be able to get by with passive cooling if you have an extremely well cooled case with excellent air flow but personally I wouldnt risk it.
Even if you were to manage passive cooling I'd be willing to bet that the drives longevity would be adversely affected, and it'd likely be running hot enough that I would be reluctant to touch it in when in operation.

Personally, I'd definitely strongly recommend dedicated active cooling for the drive.

I neglected to ask what a good operating temperature for it is. (Cooled of course).

Unless air in your case is completely stagnant I wouldn't worry about. The drive will run in environments over 130 degrees F. It should never be that hot inside your case.

The 36-lp is running cooler than the first generation x15
but its a lot hotter than IDE drives.
Passive cooling should still be enough in a good ventilated PC,
but dont stack them.
The drive is a bit louder than a normal IDE drive but my CPU and PSU
fans are still the loudest thing in my PC. Use some damping during installation.
The drive is good for a desktop, but not for a silent PC.

I didn;t really expect it to be silent, just quiet. I was going to use the minimal amount of fans, but I guess I will really have to turn everything on. BTW Rand says the 36LPs get hotter than the old X15s? Could someone clarify? Thanks.

I've been running my x15 36lp with only passive cooling for months. No problem. I do have good air flow in the case. It gets warm to the touch, but that's about it. It's a bit noisy on the seeks, but I don't hear any constant whine from it.

Yes, the newer X15-36LP does get hotter than the original. It's really not much of an issue, the drives run hot, that's just the way it is, it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them or they are going to fail. I've run an original X15 for almost 2 years and a second gen for almost a year, neither with active cooling. I have them mounted in 5.25 bays with a free bay in between.
