5 yr seagate warranty costs $25 for refurbished replacement with only remainder of time left on the original drive. The way i read the return page it was suposed to be only a hold on my credit card as in days of old..If they charge why send back the old drive.

Odd.

I found their RMA process far more difficult than necessary, but they sure didn't charge me anything.

I recently purchased a Seagate external USB drive and enclosure as a unit. The retailer said it had a 5 year warranty. I doubted that right off the bat, because I had read on the Seagate site that only certain OEM drives purchased to install in a tower, or a tower pre-assembled with a Seagate drive had a five year warranty. The Seagate site describes the product as having a 12 month warranty.

After registering my new drive on the Seagate site, I then checked my warranty conditions by entering the model and SN. Fifteen months, from October 30 2006 to February 5, 2008 !

How they came up with that number I do not know. Anyways, 15 months is better than 12, so I am happy.

Just spoke to seagate they say $24.95 charge is justified as it includes shipping back and forth. So 5 year wanranty costs $24.95 each and every time you use it. What a crock. They say the drive was well in waranty, was returned in time and the web page was very explicit and if you thought you read it wrong should have called the. Will contest charge and never never buy seagate again.
