Sunday morning I discovered that the HD in one of my laptops had died. It's a Seagate Momentus 2.5" ST9250827AS 250GB 5400RPM hard drive. When I tried to boot the computer or when I put it in a caddy and put it in another laptop as a 2nd HD, the thing emitted a strange sequence of beeps over and over every 2 seconds or so, stopped after 6-7 seconds and did the whole sequence again, over and over. After 5-10 minutes it stops making noises. I figure it's just unusable. Yes, there's data I'd like very much to get off it but I'm not going to pay hundreds of dollars to get it done.

I did a little online searching and Seagate evidently has 3 or 5 year warranties, I can't tell which.

I acquired the HD in an Acer laptop (running Vista) I bought from Best Buy in August 2009, less than 2 years ago. The Acer died about 14 months after I bought it (i.e. outside Acer's warranty period) and eventually I put the HD in a used Lenovo Thinkpad T60 I got off ebay that didn't have a HD. I formatted the drive and installed Windows XP (the Lenovo is licensed to run XP). It worked OK for a few months, but now it's evidently dead and I wonder if Seagate will honor its warranty. On the main sticker on the HD it says "This drive is manufactured by Seagate for OEM distribution. For product information or technical support, please contact your system OEM." There may be something after that, but I can't see it because the UPC sticker was placed over it. I'd appreciate some guidance. :|

If it's got a SN on it, stick it into Seagate's warranty checker on their website, can't hurt.

Oh, and wrong forum

I was debating Memory and Storage or Off Topic. Since I thought the issue was about Seagate's warranty policy and not the state of the HD, I decided this forum was the better choice. Sorry if I've offended.

Anyway, when I put in the product ID and SN Seagate's site says this:

The product you identified was sold as a system component. Please contact your place of purchase for service. Seagate sells many drives to direct OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. These products are usually configured for the OEMs only, as components for their systems. You must contact your place of purchase for any warranty support on these drives.
If you purchased this unit directly from Seagate, please return to the previous page and verify your Seagate customer number, because the customer number you entered ( ) does not match our records.

So, since the original laptop was warranted for 1 year I'm SOL?
