Seagate warranty - Packaging Instructions

So I need a replacement for my Seagate, Seagate sent me all the relevant details including a pdf on "packaging instructions".

They want the hdd inside a plastic clamshell (aka SeaShell), then it needs to be entirely surrounded by two inches of foam.

I'm just wondering how important it is to abide by their instructions. If I do, I have to pay ~$10 getting the appropriate packaging, and in the terms and conditions it says that the warranty is void if the hdd is "improperly packaged".

On the flip side I have heard people not packaging to Seagate specification and still receiving their replacements.

Does anyone on Anandtech have experience of the Seagate warranty procedure, how did you package the hdd?

Thanks in advance

I don't know about Seagate exactly, but I had to return a drive to Hitachi, and the stated very plainly that if you did not package the hd correctly, it would void the warranty, and you would not receive a replacement. I ended up buying a packaging set online (they had a link to it on the Hitachi page), and $20 later, everything was good.

So I'd get the packaging stuff right, cause paying for a new hd would just suck for something like that.
