putting a new system together here & i was looking to get me one of those 7,200 RPM 120 giggers - so which drive should i go for folks?? seagate barracuda V seems to be a bit slower than top of the line models from either maxtor or ibm?? and speaking of ibm, they have been having tons of problems w/the 60gxp
series hd's, do those realibilility issues still plague their newer units at all??
also do these new 7200 RPM 120 giggers get real hot at full load, would i have to get some sort of extra hdd cooling??

and whats the deal w/1 year warranty being offered on all these new models?? always used to be 3 yrs before??

thanks

The IBM and WD's with 8MB cache have a 3 year warranty and sometimes (crapshoot) the Maxtors as well. Speed wise the IBM GXP180 w/8MB cache takes the lead while the Cuda is the quietest.

just go for seagate barracuda then The other hard drives may be 3% faster in real world performance. If so id take the quietest one of them all:)

Also, a quiet drive feels faster, it may not be faster, but it feels faster! I really don't care if that maxtor drive beats my seagate by 3 or 4 seconds, hearing the drive can get on your nerves.

True to that. I wish I had a seagate in my main rig instead of maxtors.

1. Seagate
2. Maxtor

Never by IBM. I used to be IBM HDD's greatest fan until I had two die on me in two consecutive weeks. One of them had my grandpa's pix.........He passed away sometime back :(.....I cant even send it back to RMA coz. if I do I will lose the data which I cant!...Instead I'll get the data recovered when I become a rich guy later in my life

I like the fluid bearing drives from Maxtor or Seagate. They are very quite and run cool. We have had no problems with them at all. MAXTOR Read the specs carefully at their website to fine the Serial #'s that are Fluid bearing. The same Model drive is often made in ball bearing and fluid bearing. Drives made in JAPAN aren't FB drives. Generally, the drives made in Japan have a "J" in the last few digits of their serial #'s THESE DRIVES ARE NOT FLUID BEARING DRIVES. New EGG and GOOGLEGEAR usually list the drives as FLUID BEARING.

I wouldn't buy a drive unless it has a good warranty, which is why I'm all WD HDs now (Caviar and Raptor). I like Seagate, especially SCSI, but with a 1 year warranty it's hard to justify quiet over usage. Not a silent PC, but music at even low volumes solves that along with several strange noises in my car. Music, the world's best mechanic.
