Seagate HDDs are among the quieter drives out there. There may be an occasional 'loud' drive, but that shouldnt stop you from choosing Seagate.

My firm recommendation is to buy Seagate.

I have 3 Seagates in my sys, 2 SATA in RAID0 and an PATA. The PATA is definately quieter. The SATA's are noisy relative to that, but not as noisy as some Maxtors and some older WD's. Remember I have 2 heads going at once on the SATA so they seem louder too.

I have one seagate sata thats quite noisy... just ordered a newer model today the 250 gb 7200.8 with NCQ. I will post back here when it arrives and I have had time to determine if its noisy or not. From what I hear its quite quiet.

It seems to depend on the mounting more than anything- we use Seagates exclusively for non-server machines here at work (manufacturing company in the UK), and the same drive will sound different in different machines.

For instance, the 400Gb 7200.8 free :D evaluation sample from Seagate was silent on a desk, audible in a mini-micro tower, and fairly noisy in a BTX case

Still, they're quieter than most. The only other disks that are quieter are the Samsungs, and I don't rate them.

IMHO Seagates are among the most quiet drives there are today.....had a max and could here it seek every time......same with the one WD I had.

I mount my drives in rubber mounting washers and to be honest, can not hear the Seagates.....and I have a quiet system.....2X 120mm fans, and XP90 and ATI silencer. all the fans are Panaflos except the ATI silencer and the Northbridge which I hope to replace soon since it's by far the loudest thing in my case......
