you can get 3tb of 7200rpm for a hundred on Amazon. Seems like high fail rates. Maybe they sell a ton of them and what you are seeing on Amazon reviews are the squeeky wheels.

anybody running these? for a stanard gaming pc

Meh. $100 is an average price for a 3TB HDD.

Seagate has higher failure rates than the industry average. If you're playing the odds, buy WD Black or a Toshiba/Hitachi.

That said, either of those could fail within a week. There are no guarantees, only warranties.

one failed and i didn't feel like rma'ing it so i opened it.

3 platters.

so i checked online and compared to the other ones i have.

NONE are 1tb per platter disks.

Go to pcpartpicker and sort by $/GB - the 3TB HDDs are the lowest cost per GB, and there are a bunch of models in the $90-$110 range.

Toshiba (which bought Hitachi's drive manufacturing):

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/toshiba-internal-hard-drive-dt01aca300

Doesn't show there, but it's $99.99 at Microcenter, as well.

WD Blacks are overpriced because they're "enthusiast class." I wouldn't pick one over a Toshiba unless it were the same price. (They're faster, but the performance gains wouldn't matter in my NAS anyway.)

They were aiming for a 3Tb when they made yours, it's just that there weren't enough good sectors to make up 3Tb so they bumped it down to a 2Tb. It's pretty standard in hard drive manufacturing. That magnetic spray coating on the platters is never perfect so the drives go through a self-scan after being built to discover and block off bad areas of the platters.

Some make it as a 3Tb others get bumped down to a 2Tb some a 1.5 Tb.

As a rule of thumb avoid Seagate these days, especially anything with "DM" in the model number. Not only do those have high failure rates, but they are almost impossible for data recovery.

I don't think there are any 2TB in circulation that aren't 1TB platters at this point. You can tell what they are by the size of the notch in the upper right-hand corner. If it covers almost the entire 90 degree curve, it's the 1TB platters.

I've got 4 that I have been using in my server for 18 months. They are quiet, cool and OMG they are fast.

Maybe it's just me but the terminology the writer in that link uses is really annoying. Calling platters "dishes" and "plates" makes one sound retarded.

I've got 8 STBD2000101's that have been running strong for a year and a half so far in my SAN.
