Seagate now selling 3TB External

Soo the external drive is 479.00 according to APC mag. but it's 250.00 directly from the WD site.

I guess it pays to go directly to the source. 🙂

A 2TB WD drive (Model ST320005N4A1AS-RK) lists for 169.99 and 250.00 sounds more in-line with a 3GB internal drive.

Something just doesn't look right.

Maybe Western Digital has a deal with Seagate to sell it cheaper? 😉

The simple answer would be that there was a pricing change or an error in the original article (or both). And there are some accessories for different interfaces on Seagate's store page, although they don't explain the large discrepancy entirely.

It's an unreleased product. We won't know for sure that it's going to sell for until it's released. I've seen "official" pre-announcements from disk makers where the expected retail price differed from the actual release price several months later.

That's interesting. WD, of course, was the subject of 3TB-release rumours a few months ago. I was surprised about all the recent articles about pending 3TB disk releases, none mentioning WD. You'd think that WD, which already has experience with released "Advanced Format" disks (probably a necessity with 3TB disks) would be in a good position to release 3TB disks.

LOL about Seagate...I am instinctively avoiding all 1.5 TB drives because of the Seagate fiasco with theirs...not logical, I know...but I despise bad hardware. Firmware update or not...BAH! on Seagate for that.

Are the current 2 TB drives (any manufacturer) all that reliable? Seems like HD manufacturers are universally slipping when it comes to reliability these days.

It seems like there's been problems building reliable disks in the 1TB to 2TB range. It seems that some disk makers have been having more problems than others. In theory, the new 4K-sector disks have enhanced ECC code that's SUPPOSED to reduce uncorrectable data errors by 1/100 compared to disks using the older, shorter ECC code of 512MB-sector disks. With any luck, we'll see improved reliability with these new disks.

I will not touch their ext. or internal for a while till their is improvement. I purchased a total of 3-500gb and 1- 1.5tb and most are all dead now or developing problems. I remember when I bought the 1.5tb as a back up drive and it went dead a month after buying it! Had to ship it back.

On another note Microcenter seems to always have great deals on Seagate drives but I'm afraid to touch them anymore for a long time.
 
I have 8 Seagate 2TBs running in a RAID 5 array and I havent had any problems with them. Also, have another array of 8x 1.5 TB Seagates running in an array to have a backup copy of the active data from the first array. Yes, I am that paranoid about losing stuff 🙂

Good that you have a backup! a lot of people don't.

However, 8 drives in a RAID5 is arguably inappropriate due to limited redundancy.

The other issue is that the 'soft' error rate on 1.5-2TB drives is so high that this makes RAID5 inappropriate for important data, as the array may not be able to recover after single-drive failure.

RAID6 solves both these problems, and is the recommended option for arrays of this size (or a good backup solution if the data doesn't need high availability).

I love people like you, that not only avoid Seagate but specifically avoid its 1.5TB drives because of a firmware issues that were solved over a year ago.

Your irrational fear of the drives (and people like you) keep them at the lowest per gigabyte price point for 7200 RPM drives on the market (consistently). Heck last year I was scooping them up at prices that match what I get today as retailers were trying to ditch the drives people irrationally won't buy.

I now have 10 of these drives, and I wouldn't trade any of them as they are rock solid despite the reputation. I might have to get a few more while the irrational fear keeps them at an irrationally low price!

Thank you...I like being loved 😉

Part of my perspective is having been burned repeatedly over the years on a lot of different "new" technology...I freely admit it is an illogical opinion on these drives...but I also require reliability. Should it be so tough to ask that Seagate done more testing before shipping this drive initially? I know that it is a pipe dream these days with many different manufacturers...but I am also not usually an early adoptor of new technology for just this reason. Also, I currently own Seagate hard drives, WD hard drives, and some Hitachi drives...along with a few Intel SSDs...so I am not a fanboi of anything.

As for reliability...I have been pretty happy with the Western Digital 1 TB Black drives...I personally own 8 of them between my SBS 2008 server, main workstation and HTPC. Not a problem yet, with the oldest one being over 2 years old. Am I just lucky here? Or were the user reviews right? 🙂

You're only looking at the capacity side. Speed has increased 100 fold in the last 18 months, not just double. (SSDs). Capacity is set to double soon, with the 25nm flash. When you consider the entire package, storage is increasing exponentially, compared to price.

I just avoid the >= 1TB 7200.11 drives. Unsure about the 7200.12s but they seem alright so far.
TBH, I'd just as soon get Hitachis, WDs or Samsungs. Seagates have a marred reputation from the 7200.11 fiasco and generally run louder and hotter than the competition anyways.
