Seagate Momentus XT

Anyone know if Seagate is going to release a new generation of these Hybrid disks? I'm thinking of purchasing one for the time being until SSD's get more affordable.

I'm thinking of the same thing. Just got a x61 tablet off ebay. The 5400rpm hdd is really slowing things down. Trying to decide if I should get a 120gb SSD or the momentus XT.

Anyone own one of these hybrid drives?

I am very happy with the 500GB Momentus XT. I've used X25-Ms and the OCZ Onyx in laptops too. It's not as fast for sure, but with common laptop usage (loading a handful of the same programs), it's well-suited, especially since you can get 500GB for just over $100.

After replacing an 80GB Intel SSD with a 500GB Momentus XT, the first thing my sister noticed was not the speed, but the fact that she could hear the drive again 😛

Was thinking of this when I got my laptop, but went for an Intel X25M 160GB G2 instead. I think the idea is good, but the price is somewhat steep for an extra 4GB of SLC nand. 🙁

I'm leaning toward the SSD as well. It's a work computers, so I don't really need extra space beyond 120gb. The shock proof factor and the longer battery life aspect of the SSD's are appealing.

Yeah ... I think I'm going to take your word for it. I'm going to throw it in my laptop which currently has a 320GB 5400RPM one. And honestly, I don't run many programs. Just chrome, itunes, aim, and sometimes photoshop. Other than that, everything is storage.

Gonna throw that 320 into the PS3.

I replaced my laptop Scorpio Black 320GB with the Momentus XT 320GB. Easy direct clone - immediate reboot. The XT does become faster to load because it learns your druthers with each reboot. It is of course, no speed match for a SSD, but good value for a roadie laptop.

As for noise, it is dead quiet as are all HDDs in Lenovo Thinkpads. I believe that is because they are mounted in a tray with soft rubber rails. Ergo, no drive vibration and excellent shock security.
