Seagate Momentus 7200rpm HDD's

So has anyone else noticed these two Seagate Momentus 7200rpm HDD's (scroll all the way down) at ZZF? Does anyone know if this pricing is in any way reflective of what one should expect once availability is widespread? I've noticed that ZZF is usually rather ambitious with its pricing when they list something as "Back Order" before they have it in stock for the 1st time. So I'm doubtful about the 80GB 7200rpm selling for $300. However, I'm not so sure about the 100GB.

I don't believe those are 2.5" drives. The new Seagate Momentus 7200 RPM are not even on the street yet.

The real sweetspot for laptop HDDs are the 100 GB Toshibas @ 5400 for $166.75 .

i've heard horrible horrible things about toshiba's laptop hard drives, in addition to having one of my own toshiba drives fail on me. I'd recommend getting hitachi or seagate's 100gb 5400rpm drives

You're way off, those are 2.5" drives. Who would pay $300 for a 3.5" 100GB?

Take a look at the Hitachi 80 GB Travelstar, 7200 RPM, in stock - $219.

BTW - I have a Seagate Momentus 80 GB, 5400 RPM w/8MB cache. I replaced it with a 100 GB Toshiba 5400 RPM with a 16 MB cache. The Toshiba is a clear winner. I also have two Hitachi 60 GB 7200 RPM drives - they are OK, but tend to run a bit hot for a laptop and draw more power resulting in shorter battery legs. So, I use them in external cases as data drives for my desktop.

No argument here that Seagate's drives are more expensive, but a 7200.1 60GB will most likely outperform the Hitachi 7K60 60GB in read performance due to a higher areal density.

And of course your 100GB Toshiba 16MB cache will outperform a Seagate 80GB 8MB cache.

16MB cache > 8MB cache
100GB areal density probably greater than 80GB areal density

And Hitachi 7K60's draw an inconsequential amt of extra power and produce an inconsequential amt of heat:

Yes, I have heard that. I only base it on the fact that when I ordered a new lappie, HP would not sell it with a 7200 RPM drive, and the reason they gave was that it was inimical to the Centrino system, i.e., power consumption etc.

Their recommended drive was the Momentus 80 GB 5400. So, I went with it and changed it later. I might try the 120 GB 7200 Momentus after it hits the street. It's worth a shot.
