I RMA'd a Segate medalist 8 gig hdd because it would start making noise and lock up my system, and I got another one, but since the first was out of warranty they will not replace this replacement drive. The replacement drive has no bad sectors, and I was able to install winxp on it, but every once and awhile the drive will make a sound like it is seaching and can't find what it is looking for. When this happens, the system will freeze and then I will get a BSOD. Once and awhile it will pull out of it before the BSOD. If I hit the reset button, the HDD is not detected and won't boot, but if I shut it off and turn it back on, it works fine.
This is just in my backup machine, so I'm going to replace it with my old 13 gig maxtor, but is it safe to use as a storage drive or will it just not detect sometime and I'll lose everything on it? The SMART function says it is OK as well as other disk utilities. The old one I RMA'd did the same thing. TIA
