I bought an Aluminum 3.5" enclosure for this drive. It has no fan. I am scared now cause the HD is running hot. Is this something that I should be worried about??

If so, which is a good enclosure??

Thanx for any input.

I do not know the temp yet. I do not know how to measure that. Let me search the web to see how to measure this. Will update here once I know the temp.

I have 2x 160GB Sata Seagate HDs on a RAID 0. I don't know the temp either but they run hot also. It doesn't seem to make a difference on their performance, however. I know alot of people with large Sata drives and 10,000k RPM Sata drives. They all run hotter than you would expect if you've never had one, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

For comparison:

My 200GB Seagate reports 35C and my WD 250G reports 34C through SMART using Speedfan.

The external enclosure I got is the ADI USB/Firewire combo..here is the link to newegg..the one I have now:

Linky

I still haven't been able to check the temp. No time since our office got broken into..dammit. Anyways, I will post that number.

I am just afraid that if it is hot, it may screw up the drive which I am planning to use to back my data on.

i have the seagate 200 currently at 42 with no fans blowing on it, and very little airflow. is this bad? i didn't know it got that hot. it also lists the worst temp at 47. i think i'm going to move a fan to help it out.

My 200Gb 7200.7 surface temperature is at 30C right now. Not sure about the drive's internal sensor, but I would imagine something around 35C.

my maxtor one touch 200GB gets INSANELY(as in couldn't touch it for too long) hot so I think that's normal.

Well, the first problem is that you are backing up data on another hard drive. Hard drives can fail at any time, for any and no reason. Yes the drive is going to be warmer in an external case. Yes that may affect the life of the drive.

Ouch..my drive is running at 46C. Is this normal??

Should I get a fan enclosure??

Also, this is hd is going to be one of my backups. I also use DVDs to backup as additional. HD is just easier to restore data back from.
