Seagate Hard Drive Issues - Error message and/or OS not loading

Hey peeps...I recently installed a new Seagate hard drive and frequently get the following error message before WinXP Pro can load:

"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information."

Also, before I get the message, it takes about ~2 minutes of a "blank screen" before the message appears. If Windows does load...it still takes ~2-3 minutes for it to load.

Here's some info. from MS regards causes, etc.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477/

If I disconnect the Seagate drive, the PC loads up fine and fast (~30 seconds).

Is the Seagate drive defective? I can write to the drive fine when the OS loads. I have a Maxtor drive as the master and the Seagate as the slave. I formated the drive using Seagates software.

Thanks for any input.

Bud

Sometimes it will try to innitiate(<spell check) the drive and will not be able to, i had the same problem with a mini dv deck, as soo as i unplugged the deck the os would load.

I don't think the drive is defective, try disableing the usb boot option in bios. It might thik the drive is a removable disk and searsh it for a boot file

Thanks for the suggestion smopoim86. I'll try it tonight.

Best Regards,

I'm not seeing anything similar to "USB boot" in the BIOS. The mobo is an Epox 8rda (socket A - 462 pin) with WinXP Pro. Could there be another similar setting which may do the trick?

Thanks for the input.

Bud.

(sigh)
another booby trapped thread
No info on size or exact model of drive
soc A mobo involved is not the one in sig
talk about "master slave" presumes PATA I guess
No info on XP SP version on Maxtor

um, did you enable 48 bit registry key?
DMA enabled?
does whole drive show in disk manager?
80 conductor cable?
did you jumper correctly, put drives on cable correctly?
did you boot to and run Drive fitness test with manuf floppy?
running those NFG nvidia nforce 2 drivers instead of MS?

um, did you enable 48 bit registry key? Yes
DMA enabled? Yes

80 conductor cable? Yes
did you jumper correctly, put drives on cable correctly? Yes
did you boot to and run Drive fitness test with manuf floppy? No. I built this PC so I have no "manuf floppy" (if you're referencing some type of recovery floppy by an OEM?)
running those NFG nvidia nforce 2 drivers instead of MS? Need to confirm this.

I swapped out the Seagate for a pretty new Maxtor HD (PATA, 300GB, 16MB Cache, etc. drive but don't have the model no. info. handy) and the Maxtor seems to work fine. I also put the Seagate drive into an external HD enclosure and it seems to work fine in that setting.

Bozo Galora...I do appreciate your ideas, but the wise-cracking I could do without. Especially since 2-3 of your comments weren't warranted since I did post the info. in the original post.

wait I am confused is this your os drive?

If so I think maybe your windows is corrupt and you should try to repair it using your windows cd

unless you want to reformat again 🙂

The hard drive I'm having problems with is the Seagate which I installed for extra storage space. I don't even have anything on the drive yet. I also used the Seagate software to "troubleshoot" the drive and everything appears to have checked out fine.

I think I'll stick with the Maxtor in the PC and use the Seagate in my external HD enclosure. The Seagate has a 5-year warranty so if it craps out down the road...I should be fine.

Thanks for the suggestions🙂
