Trying to figure out if this would be a suitable replacement for my late "Gigabit NAS".

It did simple windows' file-sharing over SMB/CIFS, and also had an HTTP server that I could access via the internet.

It lists remote file-sharing, but it seems to require that you create an account on their internet site and access files that way.

i don't want a NAS which is back-doored in any way by the vendor.

I'm not particularly familiar with the seagate NAS boxes, but if I am looking for one, I typically check out the firmware thats running on NAS and see if its something the community is supportive of.

I bought a Dlink DNS 323 awhile back that everyone loved because it ran a decent flavor of linux, had some modding options and supported a lot of features. I never modded mine but the device was pretty reliable.

Compare that with the netgear at the time that ran totally proprietary software that everyone hated, and quickly fell out of favor and was discontinued.

For a single drive like you've linked, I would say you'd probably get similar performance out of a regular USB 2.0 2TB drive connected to a USB port on your router, provided you have one.

I don't have a router with a USB port. I would much prefer a solution with gigabit ethernet though.
