Seagate fluid bearings vs. other

Just wondering, what does everyone think about Seagate's fluid bearings? These Barracuda drives are amazingly quiet, and it makes me wish I had more of them. I am seriously thinking about replacing my other two 80GB Western Digitals with Seagates once I have the money to do so. According to Seagate, their fluid bearings improve reliability on their drives. Has anyone had any bad experiences with their fluid bearing drives? Do they possibly have a shorter lifespan than a comparable Western Digital would?

By the way, the two drives I'd replace are 5400 RPM 80GB Caviar drives. While they are not extremely loud, they are loud enough to be well heard over the rest of my computer. One drive in particular has a much higher whine than the other. My Barracuda on the other hand, is dead silent (except seek noise, but it is also quiet).

Hmm, or do people not care much about this?

Seagates are by far the quietest HD there are. I have a maxtor fluid bearing drive and its not even that quiet compared to the seagate one.

I'm also thinking of changing my 30GB 75GXP, although there is nothing wrong with it, to a seagate barracuda IV when i have the money🙂. I have one in my older rig and i know what you mean, they're so very quiet 😉.

Would I see any performance difference if i switched? Slower, faster or about the same?

I have two Barracuda's, 80gb, coming from Newegg Wednesday replacing my IBM's before they die, lol.
I NEED quiet, been replacing fans, PSU, etc. I am looking forward to listening to my mp3's and not my HD's.

I didn't think my IBM or Maxtor drives were very loud until I got the 80gig Seagate from Dell. I hear absolutely nothing when it is being accessed. The other drives sound terrible now.

Well, they are definitely much faster and quieter than my 5400 RPM drives. I think they might be slightly slower than other 7200 drives would be, but not by much at all. Try here:

It's a review for a WD 8MB drive, but it has a Barracuda on the charts as well. It's obviously not as fast as the drives with higher density or a bigger cache, but it has never been slow enough for me to notice. My guess is most people wouldn't notice the difference from normal drives. If you had an 8MB Caviar, you could possibly see one though. You can also compare heat/noise levels too.
