One review mentioned these being SMR (shingled), but based on the read / write benchmarks that other reviews were quoting, I doubt it.

I know this is talking about an ancient deal, but I got a 4TB WD for $80 after rebate and $25 paypal coupon black friday week at TD. The drive is my primary DVR drive since that time, even connected via USB 2.0 and it works perfect so far.

The problem with external is the warranty is almost always shorter, one year, and they can get hot. I have a little USB fan blowing on my drive to keep it cool.
