Hey Everyone, I an interested in buying a 3TB hard drive, I know the older Barracuda 3TB models had a extremely high failure rate. Does anyone know about the endurance of the new Line?
Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM008

Thanks Guys :D

What are you going to be using this drive for?
Usually, for new models, it takes about 6-12 months or so before anything solid is known about them.
If you backup important stuff, then, you can get whatever drive you want.
I tend to go with WD Black drives, those have been more reliable for me, or, HGST drives.

I used to use Seagate fairly exclusively for quite a few years. Not any more. They reliability took a hit. I'm all for cheaper, but my data (and uptime/reliability) are more important. Now, Seagate may have fixed their reliability issues. However, I wouldn't store anything important on that drive without backup. I use a Seagate for thrash drive and for some of my file server backup drives. Got to keep anything of value backed up.

The drive is going to be used for a system drive with an SSD
I hope you mean put the OS on the SSD, and use HD for other things?
If not, I highly recommend OS be put on the SSD, and use the HD as a data drive.

lol, yes the OS is on a Sandisk Ulta II :D, I was gonna get a 750 evo but the Sandisk Ultra II is a close match to the 750 evo in terms of speed but the Ultra II has way better endurance.

I tend to stay away from seagate consumer drives these days. And I agree with Elixer, the WD black and the HGST drives are better.

Meh... about 80% of my drives are Seagates, including one of the evil 3TB ones, still in daily HTPC service without problems. My original 1TB has 25K hours, my original 2TB has 22K hours, and my first 500GB portable has almost 30K hours. This is not to say Seagate is better or worse than any other HDD... I suspect them ALL of failing at the next moment.

I just buy whatever is on sale and back it up.

I have had the first model of the WD black drives and I found them to be quite loud, How are the new ones?

I have never had a problem with HDD noise. I think a lot of that depends on how they are mounted and where your case is. I have always kept mine under the desk.

Exactly. Under the desk. Quiet and out of the way.

My friend's GF, upon getting and using the "new" computer, that I directed my friend to build, commented on the new machine that "It's so quiet!". Yeah, an SSD instead of a HDD, and a new CPU fan/heatsink, set to "smart auto fan" will do that. :)

ive lost 3 seagate drives this year alone...
all right outside when warranty expired.
I am absolutely done with them. Wont touch that company again until ive seen numbers back them up they are reliable again.

Otherwise i am going straight to HGST or WD yellows.

if you do get seagate, the first thing you need to do is check its RMA period.
Seagate warranty starts on manufacturer date of the drive and not purchase date.
So if you got unlucky and got an old shelf'd drive, you warranty maybe less then what you thought it may be.

Personally I've had the best experience with WD hd's followed by Hitachi which is now owned by WD. All mechanical items fail at some point but WD has consistently been the best performer for me in that area for over two decades.

**touch wood** I have a seagate SSHD srill going strong. I love WD drives but I really don't want a green, because of that spin down feature and you have to wait for them to spin up again to use them, is a real pain in the @SS....
